If You Love IKEA's STÄLL Shoe Cabinet, Walmart Has A Similar Storage Solution For Less

Are you a fan of the sleek, space-saving nature of IKEA's STÄLL shoe cabinet, but not so much a fan of the price tag? Well, if you're not willing to spend $179.99, then you aren't necessarily out of luck just yet. There is actually a very similar piece currently on sale at Walmart. The Walmart Skyhill shoe cabinet is generally listed at $111.10, but it can sometimes be knocked down to $85.99 — almost $100 cheaper than the IKEA alternative.

It is worth noting that the Walmart shoe cabinet is about 10 inches shorter than the STÄLL, so it may not be able to hold as many large pairs of shoes, though the description states that it can hold around 18 to 24 pairs in total. However, if one of your main priorities is saving on floor space, the Walmart option could be the one for you, as its smaller size mean it may be more likely to fit into tight entryways or cramped mudrooms.

Also, rather than the recessed handles of the IKEA version, the Walmart equivalent comes with small gold handles, which offer a bit more character and glam. And one small but useful addition that the Walmart cabinet has is optional add-on hooks. These can be attached to the side, enabling you to store handbags, totes, lanyards, or other items without cluttering up the top. The hooks, however, are made in a matte black style, which does clash somewhat with the gold handles. So, on that note, let's explore how you can personalize the more affordable Walmart Skyhill shoe cabinet to maximize storage space in a way that is more suited to your personal design tastes.

Personalizing Walmart's Skyhill shoe cabinet

If you need somewhere to store your shoes so they stop cluttering up your entryway or bedroom floor but aren't that keen on the plain white color of this Walmart cabinet, there are actually a few different ways you can personalize it. One quick and simple way to give a cabinet a high-end, intentional look is to change the hardware. While the current gold handles are good for a polished, glamorous look, you could opt for some wrought iron-style knobs to suit a more rustic home design instead. Alternatively, you could opt for some sleek chrome knobs to emphasize the mid-century feel already suggested by the cabinet's clean lines and simple angles.

Another great way to give this space-saving cabinet extra dimension is to add some trim to the doors. Simply use a nail gun or some wood glue to attach trim in whatever design you want onto each of the individual drawers. Then, use caulk to fill in the seams between the trim and the cabinet doors for a seamless look. Finally, you can paint over both the trim and the rest of the cabinet in a single color, making sure to use a shellac-based primer underneath it first to ensure that the paint sticks. Painting it all one color will help make the trim look like a natural part of the piece. This is a great way to upgrade furniture like this cabinet and make it look much more upscale without eating into the valuable storage space it has inside.
