Use A Simple Chain To Keep Garden Hoses Neat & Organized

Water hoses may be a key piece of lawn equipment, but they sure can be difficult to keep neat and tidy. While Amazon has a stylish solution for storing garden hoses, if you're looking for an even less expensive option, a simple chain, screw, and snap hook are all you need. As demonstrated by content creator crafty_fixer on Instagram, with a little do-it-yourself action, you can transform these few materials into an easy-to-use garden hose holder.

Best of all, the materials are easy to find (you may even have them already in your home), and you can DIY as many of these chain organizers as you need. You can get metal chains and snap hooks (aka carabiners) at most home improvement stores and online at places like Amazon.

If you want to get thrifty, you could even use an old bike chain for this project. Or, if you have any planter chains, that could work, too. Many planter chains can hold up to 10 to 15 pounds; garden hoses when empty, depending on size and material, can weigh anywhere between 2 and 15 pounds. The Unywarse 50-Foot Stainless Steel Water Hose, for example, weighs only 5.8 pounds when not in use. Also, if you go with planter chains, you can always use two together or double one (if it's long enough) for extra support.

The tools you'll need for this garden hose project include a drill and either bolt cutters or another chain-cutting tool to cut the chain down to size. You'll also need a structure, such as a wooden fence or wall, to attach your garden hose holder to.

How to create a chain garden hose holder

Ready to get organized? Start by coiling your garden hose in a circle. (If you're not sure how to do that, this is the best way to coil your garden hose to keep it free of tangles.) Then, thread a piece of chain through the center and around one side to gauge how long your chain needs to be. Keep in mind the chain should have a little bit of slack since it'll be screwed into a wall, so add a few inches to your measurement. After all, it's a lot easier to cut the chain if you get it too long versus trying to fix a too-short chain.

Holding the top piece of the chain (left image above), insert a screw through the next link – make sure the screw head is wider than the link — and drill it into your fence. Add the snap clip to the end of the chain. When you're ready to store your garden hose, slide the chain through the middle of the coil, then attach the snap hook to the top link.

No wooden fence? No problem. If you're looking for inexpensive ways to declutter your shed and maximize your outdoor space, add this storage option to the inside of your shed walls. It can keep all types of cords, Christmas lights, and hoses neat and easy to access. It would also work in the garage and even on a wood pallet that leans up against a sturdy structure.
