If you enjoy relaxing in your backyard during the evenings, you've probably considered installing a fire pit. There's nothing quite like getting cozy by the fire and sneaking in a s'more or two. However, after one look at fire pits on the market, you might think twice about whether or not it's really all that important to have one in your backyard. Even a simple ready-made fire pit can range anywhere from $150 to $500. Fire pit kits and custom options cost much more. But don't fret! There's no need to burn all your money. It's actually extremely easy to create your own cozy fire pit on a budget

To build your own gorgeous outdoor feature that'll keep you warm and cozy, purchase 24 standard concrete cinder blocks, 12 concrete cinder block caps, stakes, a level, and a rubber mallet. Following this method with standard blocks, you should be able to construct a fire pit that's 56 inches wide on all sides — plenty of room for you and your loved ones to gather around. Once you secure your materials, kick off this project by preparing your installation site. Use four stakes to plot out the dimensions of the fire pit. The spot should be large enough to accommodate the blocks. Clear the area of any grass or debris and level it out as evenly as possible. When you feel like the installation site looks clear and level, it's time to set down your first cinder block.

Concrete blocks are perfect for a square fire pit

Place your first block down at one of the corners. Use the level and mallet to make sure it sits completely flat. Make adjustments to the ground below if necessary. Place the next two blocks in line, repeating these steps as necessary. Turn the fourth block perpendicular to start your corner, then continue on placing blocks all the way around the square. Once this first layer is in place, stake the next row of blocks to form a 16 inch tall walls. Each layer of the wall should use 12 blocks in total.

Take some time to confirm the top and bottom rows are perfectly aligned. When you're sure everything is even, place cinder block caps, pavers, or bricks around the top of the walls to give the fire pit a polished look. If you're worried about stability, you can use a concrete adhesive to secure these toppers in place. Rake up any debris around the fire pit and tamp down the dirt near the blocks to secure them in place. And there you have it! You've created a simple, affordable fire pit you're sure to get a ton of use out of.

If you're interested in elevating this minimalist design, there are a few ways to help your DIY fire pit match your yard's aesthetic. For a little more of a refined look, you can simply place a decorative fire ring like this Sunnydaze 36-inch Outdoor Fire Ring inside of your cinder block pit. If you're thinking about cooking over the fire, pick up a grill topper to fit across the top of the fire pit. To really transform this simple design, consider applying a stucco finish around the outside, after securing the blocks with a concrete adhesive, of course.
