It Was Popular In The '60s — Now It's The Rare Pyrex Bowl We Want In Our Kitchens
If you love vintage dishware, there are certain brands that you're likely on the lookout for when you go to thrift stores, antique malls, and yard sales. Pyrex is likely on that list thanks to its enduring quality and the unique designs the brand has offered over the years. Certain vintage patterns are harder to find, but thrifting is a great way to hunt for the "holy grail" of Pyrex pieces if you're trying to complete a collection without spending a lot of money. One rare pattern that makes a beautiful addition to any kitchen is the Pyrex Chip N' Dip in Ivy.
This pattern was released in the early '60s as a promotional item and features a strip of green ivy leaves and vines intertwined. In the pattern, there are both solid leaves and those stylized with either dots or stripes. The Pyrex Chip N' Dip was originally released without an official name, with customers typically calling it either "Ivy" or "Green Ivy," based on the pattern printed on the classic white milk glass. The set features two of Pyrex's iconic Cinderella bowls, which have handles that double as pourable spouts. The smaller bowl can perch on the side of the larger one with a brass metal bracket, making it the perfect height for dipping. Not only can both bowls be used together for chips and dip, but they are also good mixing bowls thanks to their spouts.
What to look for when picking up the Pyrex Ivy Chip N' Dip bowls
If you're lucky enough to find the Chip N' Dip in Ivy, it's important to check for the correct markings on the bottom of the bowls. When you check for the backstamp on the base of each piece, a sign of value on vintage Pyrex, it should include "Trademark Pyrex" in all capital letters, with "Made in U.S.A." and the word "ovenware" underneath.
When looking for valuable vintage Pyrex pieces at the thrift store, it's always a good idea to consider the condition and look for items without scratches, chips, and wear to the paint. And with the Chip N' Dip in the Ivy pattern, you'll want to be on the lookout for the two sizes that make up this set. While you might get lucky and find a full boxed set, you're better off looking for both the 1.5-pint bowl and a 4-quart bowl individually. The sizes are marked on the bottom of each dish. There is also a small brass wire holder that clips onto the larger bowl and holds the smaller bowl over the edge to keep the chips and dip together.
If you're able to find the brass holder, it will absolutely add to the value of this set, as even just the two bowls together are being listed for as much as $140 on Etsy and $125 on eBay. Just the large chip bowl has even sold for as much as $59 on eBay. So even if you just come across one part of the Chip N' Dip set, it's worth picking up to add to your kitchen decor.
