Who knew that a humble bath mat could be a common item you can repurpose as wall art?

In addition to a basic bath mat, this DIY uses a wooden board and staple gun to give the piece some stability. For your layering bits, you'll also need scissors and extra material from a towel, leftover fabric squares, T-shirts, or even another bath mat or two! Optional supplies include pom-poms and tassels or any other decorative accessories that speak to you. To hang your work of art, you'll need two sawtooth hangers or D-ring hangers and nails, plus a hammer.

Before we begin, if you're upcycling an old bath mat, send it through a good wash and dry cycle, using a little baking soda on your bath mat for a truly clean smell. Don't worry if there are stains; you can cover them up later. To mount the bath mat, grab a rectangular wooden board like Brit + Co did, or buy a canvas with a sturdy wood frame from a local craft store. Begin by laying the bath mat over the board and, using a staple gun, attach it around all four sides. Alternatively, use a hot glue gun to secure it in place. Trim off any excess if the bath mat is larger than the board.

Now you can get creative with other bath mats, old towels, or leftover fabric. Grab your scissors and cut out fun geometric shapes. Layer them onto the bath mat background in whatever fashion looks right to your artistic eye. This is where you can creatively cover up any unsightly stains that didn't come out in the wash.
