What Happens If You Plant Everything Bagel Seasoning

There's a new online trend that's aiming to answer everyone's burning question: what happens if you plant Everything Bagel seasoning? The delicious concoction of seeds can be used to make almost anything tastier, but can it actually grow poppies and sesame plants? This is what users on social media have been wondering. Luckily, TikTok creator @toastyhomestead actually took the time to put the seasoning to the test.

First, the TikToker sprinkled the Everything Bagel seasoning on top of a cup of soil, and covered the surface with ice so that the poppy seeds had the best chance to grow. However, the results were lackluster, and nothing had sprouted after two full weeks. If you want to grow a sesame seed plant of your very own, simply planting Everything Bagel seasoning is not a viable method. But @toastyhomestead noticed a pitfall in the original planting plan, leading them to create two backup experiments.

While sesame seeds demand hot, humid environments, the perfect time of the year for planting poppies isn't what you'd expect – poppies prefer much cooler climates. Therefore, in addition to planting the entire mixture of Everything Bagel seasoning, the TikTok user also tried planting the poppy seeds and sesame seeds separately, and under different conditions, for the best chance at success.

The results of the modified everything bagel seasoning test

To create a more wintry condition for the poppy seeds, the TikToker froze some seeds in a block of ice before allowing it to melt into the soil. The sesame seeds were planted normally, to be given a warmer growing environment. Two weeks were also allotted to give the two plants time to sprout. Unfortunately, neither the poppy seeds nor the sesame seeds ended up growing. Interestingly, the creator mentioned that some of their viewers had success with this experiment, so the results may vary from mix to mix.

There are a few reasons why the experiment may have failed. Although the garlic and onion were unlikely to cause problems, the biggest reason for the lack of success was likely that they had been heated or roasted. Seeds need to have living embryonic tissue to germinate, and several online forums have reported that planting cooked seeds is never viable. Unfortunately, it seems that premade Everything Bagel seasoning likely won't produce plants — no matter the growing conditions. If you're wondering whether any of your other old seeds are viable or not, there's a clever hack for that.
