If your kitchen cabinet is cluttered with more lids than matching containers, you don't necessarily have to throw the extras away. You're probably already aware of the many ways you can repurpose the plastic container lids and even the numerous tiny mason jar lids, but what about awkward old pot lids? One of our favorite things to do is turn them into decorative pieces for the home. For example, using a pot lid and a mason jar, you can create a unique wall display for your fresh flowers. If you already have the materials on hand, the project can also cost considerably less than buying a similar wall-mounted vase. Don't mind that the lid looks old or worn, in fact, those are the best for making beautifully unique rustic home decor pieces that aren't paintings.

For this DIY, the pot lid serves as a decorative wall mount, while the mason jar acts as a vase that hangs from the lid's handle using a loop or hanger. With that picture of the finished setup in mind, your goal should be to choose a pot lid with a top handle or knob (not a side handle). A knob makes it much easier to secure the mason jar's hanger. If replacement isn't an option, say the loop-shaped handle is molded together with the lid, you'll just have to add a hook to the mason jar hanger.

This first step involves mounting the pot lid against the wall. How you do this will depend on the shape or design of your lid. If you have a lightweight lid without a lip, you may be able to secure it with appropriately rated adhesive hooks, positioning two beneath the lid and another near the upper rim to keep it from tipping forward. There's also the option of just nailing the lid to the wall at the top and the bottom edges (this works if your lid has a metallic flat-rim). For a cap style metallic lid (one with a deep lip), you can first mount a wood plank on the wall, then screw the lid onto that wood. A pair of appropriately sized screws positioned on opposite sides of the knob can help secure the lid and prevent it from rotating.

Once you've chosen the method to install your lid on the wall, you can beautify the lid first, if you like, by either painting or decoupaging it. And once you're happy with the look, go ahead and install it on the wall where you want the flower display. To reuse your old glass jars around the house as a flower display, all you need to do is add a hanging mechanism to the jar. You can wrap sturdy craft wire securely beneath the jar's threaded rim, then attach another length of wire on opposite sides to create a hanging loop. The same process can be followed but using string or jute rope. Another option is to tie yarn or twine macrame-style to make the jar hanger.

Once the hanging hardware for the mason jar is ready, pour some water into the jar and arrange your cut fresh flowers inside. You can even use a flower frog lid (a mesh-like lid) to make it easier to arrange the flower stems and keep them in place. Now hang the mason jar with the flowers on the wall-mounted pot lid via the knob. Keep the arrangement lightweight, and confirm that the lid, wall fasteners, and jar hanger can safely support the combined weight of the jar, water, and flowers before hanging it. Swap out the flowers as the seasons change, and this quirky upcycled DIY can remain part of your decor throughout the year.
