Sherwin-Williams has been bringing paints and coatings to the world since 1866. Founded in Cleveland, Ohio, the company still operates its headquarters there, where it is classified as the largest manufacturer of paints and coatings in the world by revenue. Many homeowners know and trust Sherwin-Williams paint, whether they are looking for one of its myriad white shades or utilizing a more vibrant color to make their walls pop.
Perhaps you are familiar with the Shoji White hue, which is the soothing Sherwin-Williams paint shade that's perfect for a living room refresh, or other impressive colorways. But you might not have realized the last time you stepped into a home improvement store that Sherwin-Williams owns some of the most recognizable brands on the shelves, like Krylon, Valspar, Dutch Boy, and more.
The Sherwin-Williams company operates three different areas of business, including the Paint Stores Group, which sells Sherwin-Williams paint, coatings, and supplies, the Performance Coatings Group, and the Consumer Brands Group. The Performance Coatings Group mainly sells to industrial and manufacturing markets. But the Consumer Brands Group is the one that features a range of notable brands you'll find right next to Sherwin-Williams on the shelves.
Valspar
Valspar produces a wide range of paints and coatings, from interior paints and primers to exterior wood stains. It also sells several types of concrete and floor coatings, like Valspar Concrete & Garage Floor 1-Part Epoxy Paint, which works on patios, basements, garage floors, and driveways. These products are available at retailers like Lowe's and Ace Hardware, but also at many independent retailers across the United States. Founded in 1806, Valspar has been in continuous operation for even longer than Sherwin-Williams, but Sherwin-Williams acquired Valspar in 2017 for $9.3 billion. The latter company moved to Cleveland shortly after.
Minwax
The Minwax brand was founded in 1904 as a waterproofing material venture. By the 1940s, it had reformulated its notable Wood Finish for home use.
