Use Paper Towel Holders To Transform Dollar Tree Skulls Into Spooky Yet Chic Décor

With so many DIY ideas on social media, it can get expensive trying to recreate them for your own home. But getting supplies from Dollar Tree can help, as it has so many inexpensive items that can be used in unexpected ways. For example, you can easily turn a Dollar Tree paper towel holder into a décor piece for your countertop that's perfect for spooky season: a three-headed skull tower.

This DIY project from TikToker Kasey Nicole Marie uses items you can pick up from the Dollar Tree, including three plastic Halloween skulls and two Cooking Concepts paper towel holders. Meanwhile, two plastic dishes (like this heavy-duty plastic plant saucer from The Home Depot) serve as both the base and the topper. Other things you'll need include hot glue, a knife or blade, black spray paint, a paint brush, and gold paint, plus some finishing items to bring it all together. The original creator added in some black florals, LED pillar candles, and black spider webbing.

This skull tower is a relatively quick and easy project to craft, even once you start to make it your own. You can use this skull tower for Halloween candy, as an entryway bowl, or as a budget-friendly and unique centerpiece that adds a spooky twist to any table.

To make your Dollar Tree skull tower, cut into both the top and the bottom of each plastic skull. You'll want to make the cuts large enough so that you can push the metal paper towel holder through, with the middle skull needing enough space to fit two holders, as you'll be flipping the second paper towel holder to create a flat surface for the bowl topper (above left image). The result will be a stacked effect.

Next, glue the bottom of the plastic dishes to each end of the tower. Once the glue has set, spray paint the entire tower black. After the paint dries, add gold paint into the eye sockets and nostrils to add a spooky glow. While the project is technically done at this point, this is the time to accessorize and add in any finishing touches. For example, you can add florals along the bottom of the tower, as well as in the bowl. To the bowl, decorate it with the black webbing. Then finish things off with an LED pillar candle or two.

This skull tower lets you turn a few Dollar Tree items into a unique Halloween candle holder. But that's only one way to use this DIY piece, as it would also be a nice way to display some small gourds and pumpkins, like these Halloween-themed spooky pumpkins from Dollar Tree, in your entryway. And, instead of using faux flowers inside the skull tower's bowl, perhaps opt for some small glitter ornaments to add more sparkle.

You could also change it from all-black to using other Halloween colors, such as purple or orange. Alternate colors, or perhaps go for a more natural look by spray painting the skulls with white, then use brown paint to make them seem "dirty." One suggestion from a TikTok user suggested not spray painting the skulls at all and getting "some light brown acrylic paint, rub sparsely on the skulls and flat clear matte spray." According to them, this'll give the skulls the "look like they were just [dug] up."
