Use An Egg Carton To DIY The Cutest Hanging Jellyfish Decor For Your Patio

In the DIY department, there are lots of big projects for major decor pieces like a DIY sliding book storage shelf or a stunning table. However, sometimes, the most fun DIYs are cute, easy, and small. Things like tiny decorations that you can hang around your house are so satisfying to make, like these adorable DIY jellyfish made from something you were probably planning on throwing away. So, don't toss out old egg cartons without trying this cute DIY.

This DIY comes from YouTube creator @Mummy_and_my_three, and the results are beyond cute. Using egg cartons, she made small jellyfish with long, dangling tentacles that can blow in the wind. The idea is to cut pieces from the egg carton to create the body and face of the jellyfish and to glue thin, long pieces of paper to the inside to act as the tentacles. When you're done, you can hang them outside on your patio, where the tentacles can blow in the wind delicately. You can also hang them at home if you prefer, using nails against a wall or simple hooks. Or, use these for temporary decor during an indoor or outdoor birthday party.

In addition to one egg carton, you'll also need some hot glue to attach the pieces and some paint and a sponge to give your jellyfish some color. To draw the faces, a simple thin black marker will do. And for the tentacles, get some pieces of colorful crafting paper, like construction paper, or some crepe paper streamers. You'll also need scissors to cut the carton and some thread to hang the jellyfish.

First step here is to cut the pieces you'll need to create the jellyfish out of egg boxes. For the body, you'll need to cut out the raised pieces from inside the carton (the part of the carton that sticks up to separate the eggs and prevent breakage). For the head, cut two equal sections from the corner pieces of the carton, giving you two half circles. These should be shorter and more rounded than the body piece. Using glue, attach the corner pieces to create a bowl-like shape. For extra whimsy, you can trim the ends of the head and body pieces into a wavy shape before you glue the head onto the body.

Now is the time to decorate your jellyfish. Use a sponge and some paint to give it softly diffused color, or spray paint the jellyfish if you want it to be uniform. Spritz on glitter spray to give it some sparkle, or add gems on top for a bedazzled look. And if you like how it looks, use a black marker to give it a little face. Or, add some googly eyes for fun. 

Then, use glue to attach long strings of paper inside the body piece to act as the tentacles. You can also use other things as tentacles instead, like silver or holographic ribbon. Another option is to use glitter twine and add some pearls or charms to the ends of the tentacles, or even small bells, to turn this project into a beautiful DIY wind chime. And once you've mastered the technique, you can repeat this DIY over and over again to create small jellyfish to hang all over your porch in different colors and styles.
