Pyrex is an iconic kitchenware brand with a loyal following. The quality and craftsmanship of the cookware, combined with its unique colorways and patterns, have made vintage Pyrex dishes particularly collectible — and valuable. On top of all that, there are a lot of discontinued Pyrex patterns you can only buy secondhand, and these pieces are highly coveted. Over the years, Corning, the manufacturer of Pyrex, has released selected patterns on CorningWare, a sister brand to Pyrex. One such pattern is the Spice O'Life, which is also known to collectors as French Spice.
The pattern features an array of herbs and vegetables — from peppers and artichokes to onions and tomatoes — against a white background. There's also a golden bell at one end of the pattern. While the Spice O'Life pattern is mostly found on CorningWare dishes released between 1972 and 1989, it also adorns the lids of a set of Pyrex Stack 'N See storage canisters. In our humble opinion, this rustic, nostalgic '70s discontinued Pyrex pattern belongs back in stores quick smart!
The canisters, which are made of clear glass with creamy white plastic lids, came in a range of sizes. The larger canisters of the set can be stacked to free up space and make organizing pantry items easier. Some of the canisters have holes in the lids, making them ideal for dried herbs or salt and pepper. Even a tiny toothpick holder was released as part of the set. Even if you're not lucky enough to snag a full set, you can get a lot of use out of the individual jars.
Learning to shop for vintage Spice O'Life Pyrex canisters
Although these canisters are not Pyrex bowls, they're still valuable vintage pieces we want back on our kitchen table — or on the shelves of our open pantry. They're still as usable for dried goods storage as they were in the 1970s. You could even use one of the larger canisters as a countertop cookie, candy, or snack jar. If you can find these canisters at a thrift store, yard sale, or flea market, you'll likely save some money. If you can't find Spice O'Life canisters in real life, shop online at eBay or Etsy, where you can find individual pieces for around $10 and incomplete sets starting at about $30. Check back often to grow your collection, nabbing the canisters you need as they pop up for sale.
No matter how you get your canisters, check the items to make sure what you're purchasing is authentic. There should be manufacturer's marks on both the glass body of the canisters and on the lid. Most of the canisters have the words "PYREX" and "Made in U.S.A." on the base of the glass jar, as well as a safety warning that they're not to be used in the freezer or on the range. The inside of the lid should read "MADE FOR PYREX WARE" along with a warning to remove the lid before using the glass canister in the oven. There's a catch, though. Unlike most Pyrex pieces, the marks on the glass canisters are printed on and can scratch off over time.
