Patio string lights are an easy DIY option for outdoor lighting. On ordinary, non-holiday-season evenings, the bare bulbs are perfectly fine. However, if you're planning a special occasion, like a Halloween party, you may want to give the lights a decorative boost. You could simply switch out your white- or yellow-colored string lights for orange- or purple-hued ones, but arguably, the solution lacks finesse. Thankfully, TikToker Us and the Mutts has a solution to this fright-night illumination dilemma. They added plastic Jack-o'-lantern trick-or-treat buckets to their string lights — and in the process, added some '90s-inspired charm to their front yard.
Decorating for Halloween in '90s style is all about embracing whimsy instead of gore. That means you should look for plastic pails with cutesy Jack-o'-lantern faces, replete with triangle noses and eyes and huge toothy grins. Color really matters, too. Orange and black are the most traditional hues of Halloween. However, from about 1995 onward, purple started trending, too.
You can tap into any of the popular Halloween colors of the '90s for this DIY project. Whatever hue you go with, choose mini pails made of thin plastic that will let the light through. A 24-pack of 4E's Novelty Mini Pumpkin Trick or Treat Buckets goes for about $22. Finally, get some string lights. For an outdoor Halloween decor idea that will transform your yard, go for a set with Edison bulbs in Halloween colors. These Justpro Edison-Style LED String Lights have orange, purple, and green bulbs and cost about $20.
Adorning string lights with nostalgic Jack-o'-lantern pails
First, plug in your set of string lights to check that they're working correctly. If you're using an old set, look for burned-out or broken lights. If your string lights are battery-powered or run on a timer, check that the batteries are fresh and make sure the timer is functioning as it should. Once that's done, it's time to add the pumpkin pails to the bulbs. Unhook the handle from one side of the pail and scoop a bulb into the pail. Wrap the handle around the wire and hook it back onto the pail. If you've done this correctly, the pail will create a sort of shade or cover for the bulb. Repeat this process until you've added pails to every bulb. That's it! Your new cheap and easy DIY Halloween decoration is ready to hang outdoors.

If you really want to bring back the nostalgia of a '90s Halloween with these pumpkin lanterns, you have a couple of alternative options. The decorations for spooky season parties during the era featured more characters than just ol' Jack. This 12-piece set of Mcpinky Mini Halloween Buckets is a good example — skeletons, Frankenstein's monster, and black cats accompany the pumpkins. There's no reason you couldn't use these adorably creepy buckets in place of the Jack-o'-lantern pails. You could also tie some Soulchen Mini Halloween Ghost Piñatas to the wire between the lanterns. The white paper exterior would glow eerily in the dim light. If you fill them with Halloween candy, you could remove them at the end of the night and give them out to guests as party favors.
