One of the most common ways to add a little life to your boring windows is to decorate them with popular curtain styles. However, they come with their own set of rules and need to be tied back or should fall just-so to look good in a room. Not to mention the maintenance required for different kinds of fabrics. If you're tired just imagining this scenario, there's a more appealing way of upgrading your windows. Simply use acrylic paint to draw fun designs on the glass panels and add a pop of seasonal decor.

This idea is budget-friendly and will instantly make your windows the talk of the town. Plus, it's 100% customizable since you get to dictate the designs and colors. The painted panels won't block natural light, either. But they may offer additional privacy (when your curtains are drawn back), depending on the overall color scheme and design. Bonus advantage: it's a great craft to try out with your kids and get them involved in getting your house ready for different seasons.

Coming to the required supplies, you need a few bottles of water-based acrylic paint (washable tempera also works), a few paint brushes, a palette, and some old drop cloth to minimize drips. Though optional, keep a bottle of dish soap handy (brownie points if it's clear, as colored soaps may slightly alter your paint hue) if you're worried about cleaning up your art from the glass panels. Paint pens or chalk markers can come in handy, too, if you're a perfectionist or beginner DIYer as they're easier to control than a brush.

Decorate your windows with acrylic paint

The first thing you want to do is clean your dirty windows with a cleaning solution you already own. While it dries, put down an old cloth to catch drips and decide on your design. Do you want large, colorful flowers for spring and summer? Or, do you want to turn your windows into a snowy, festive scene? Maybe add some merriment with a winter village? Perhaps, a scary character from your favorite spooky movie would be perfect for fall. Whichever way you go, ensure you have a clear picture in your head (or use a stencil) to avoid issues later.

Once you're ready, mix your paints and add a little dish soap to each color on the palette. While this is optional, it'll ensure you don't have to wrestle with your windows later to take the paint off. It'll also allow it to stick well to the slick panels. In case you're still a little apprehensive, do a spot test in an inconspicuous corner before proceeding. Now, get painting. You can either draw your outline with a marker and fill in the empty spots later with acrylic paint, use painter's tape to set firm boundaries, or directly brush the paint on your windows to bring your vision to life. Either way, move your brush in one direction for a seamless finish. After you're done, seal your artwork with a paint-friendly sealant, such as Mod Podge Spray Acrylic Sealer, and enjoy your beautiful windows all season. When it's time to change the design, spray it with hot soapy water to loosen the paint and use a scraper to peel it away.
