Lowe's Highest-Rated Mower Blade: 'Cuts Like A Champ'

Add House Digest on Google:

Although a number of things can impact the durability of lawn mower blades, even with regular mowing they'll probably last two or three years. Eventually, though, you're going to notice the telltale signs they need replacing. The easiest option is to buy a new one from whoever made your lawn mower, but the right alternative could save you money and might even improve performance. Lowe's says the Greenworks Pro 21-Inch Multipurpose Mower Blade fits most brands, and one buyer said it "cuts like a champ," so it might be a good choice for your machine.

This Greenworks mower blade gets an impressive 4.8 stars from customers, making it the highest-rated option that Lowe's has right now. It currently costs $21.98. It's made from hardened steel that has been given a rust-resistant finish. The majority of buyers say their mower cuts better, with less vibration, and the blade stays sharper for longer.

The product overview tells us it will fit Greenworks 80V and 60V cordless mowers and Kobalt 80V models. The latter is no surprise, as Kobalt mowers are made by Greenworks anyway. The description also says these blades are universal, which, on the face of it, is exactly what you need to know if you own a 21-inch lawn mower from EGO Power, Ryobi, Worx, or any of the other brands that offer models with a deck this size.

Is a 'universal' lawn mower blade right for your machine?

With so many different devices on the market, the obvious question is whether lawn mower blades can truly be universal. There's more to consider than just the deck size. You need to check the mounting hole diameter and both the width and length of the mower blade. A poor fit will certainly cause problems, and profile can affect things like discharge and mulching. Each is an important factor when choosing the right type of lawn mower blade to buy.

Greenworks themselves say the blades have a "unique chevron design that improves airflow and lift." That may be true when fitted to a Greenworks lawn mower, but if yours is from a different brand, it's difficult to know how the shape will affect the performance. It might be fine. However, it might vibrate or cut poorly.

Unfortunately, while many of the customer comments say how well these blades work for Greenworks and Kobalt machines, none mention other brands. Tellingly, perhaps, while Lowe's calls it universal, the Greenworks website does not. So you could be taking a risk if it's not a precise match for your lawn mower. It's a very competitive market. If your own brand replacement is more expensive, you might still be able to find an alternative that specifically lists your model. If not, it could be worth shelling out the extra few bucks for the real deal rather than risk poor cutting or potential damage to your machine.
