Stop Tossing Old Lampshades — Use Them To Make Adorable Coffee Table Decor

If you have an unused lampshade lying around but haven't gotten rid of it, you'll be happy to know that there are tons of decorative possibilities just waiting to be discovered. And of all the ways to repurpose old lampshades, Factory Direct Craft's method on YouTube is by far the cutest. They used the leftover framework to create a three-dimensional display of greenery that screams cottage core. All you need is an old bell-shaped lampshade (this is crucial to the design), a tabletop bird bath, bendable faux foliage and branches, landscaping pebbles, and a set of candles. The result is a cozy yet rustic and oh-so-stylish centerpiece for your coffee table, entryway table, fireplace mantle, or dining tabletop.

The key is to start with a clean slate by removing the fabric of the lampshade, so only the metal frame remains. You may be able to tear it with your hands, but you can also use a pair of scissors or a box cutter to make precise cuts or remove glued pieces. Next, wrap the exposed metal frame with bendable sprigs of greenery or miniature garlands. Although the video doesn't show this next step, Factory Direct Craft said in the description that they faux grapevine around the base of the frame. The result resembles a bird's nest. Then, line the bird bath basin with pebbles and place a set of flameless candles in the middle. Lower the decorated lampshade frame over the bird bath so that it's lined up with the basin edges. And that's it!

Tips for recreating this upcycled lampshade decor

To successfully recreate this project, you'll need a measuring tape, a box cutter or scissors, wire cutters (for dividing faux foliage), and possibly a hot glue gun. Some of the items in the video are available for sale on Factory Direct Craft's website, like the 12-inch Natural Grapevine Wreath used around the base of the lampshade. This Artificial Hypericum Berry and Leaf Spray on Amazon appears to be what was used to cover the lampshade. You don't have to buy their brand, though, and you may find cheaper options at stores like Hobby Lobby or Dollar Tree. As for the basin, this fiber clay bird bath from Amazon is under $70 and looks very similar. Opt for a set of small flameless candles with a remote control so you don't have to disassemble the arrangement to turn them on or off.

Ultimately, the dimensions of the lampshade will determine what size bird bath and other materials you'll need. Measure the shade's height and diameter to ensure it aligns with the edges of the bath basin. You can always add to the grapevine at the bottom to hide any gaps if the bath is too wide or narrow. You also need to consider the overall height of the lampshade in combination with the added height of the pedestal bath and the candles. You want the unique coffee table statement piece to stand out without blocking the line of sight to the TV. If the candles are too big or poke out of the frame, the display could look disproportionate and cluttered.

How to elevate the design

While the arrangement is stunning on its own, there are a few ways to elevate or alter the design. Add to the ambiance by intertwining the faux greenery with mini, battery-powered string lights. You could also hot glue moss or leaves to bare spots on the metal frame for a fuller look. While the candles are a nice touch, consider decorating the center with a small fairy house or DIY your own version of a bird's nest terrarium. You could even put a small figurine or statue in the middle, like this cute Bird Figurine Yard Art Lawn Ornament.

Another option is to redecorate the centerpiece based on upcoming seasons or holidays. Replace the existing grapevines and greenery with fall leaf garlands, winterberries and evergreen branches, or picks with mini easter eggs and spring flowers. Use the center of the basin to showcase a festive scene. Some examples include a decorative pumpkin or spooky statues, snowmen or Santa Claus miniatures, or Easter bunnies or freshly hatched chick figurines. The possibilities are endless!
