Say Goodbye To A Store-Bought Wreath: Turn Old Garden Tools Into Rustic Doorway Décor

Add House Digest on Google:

Front door wreaths are a staple in classic home décor. But store-bought wreaths can be a bit expensive and also a little, well, basic. If you want something more unique and happen to have some old gardening tools lying around, we have a DIY you'll love. We're going to ditch traditional front door wreaths and make our own, using repurposed garden tools.

This wreath makes an adorable, rustic statement piece to hang on your front door. If you're a big gardener, it would be perfect for a garden shed door, too. Alternatively, make one to gift to the green thumb in your family or friend group. It's a brilliant way to repurpose old garden tools in and around your home, only requires minimal supplies, and can be done by even the most novice crafter.

For this DIY, you'll need a grapevine wreath and some artificial greenery, like fern or ivy. You'll also need floral wire and wire cutters, along with a hot glue gun with glue sticks. Of course, you'll also need old gardening tools. Three or four hand-held tools work best here, though you can use as many as your wreath can hold. Tools like a small trowel, fork, and rake are great choices. Optionally, you can grab some paint and sandpaper, ribbon or bows, and other decorative items like artificial moss or flowers.

How to transform old gardening tools into a garden wreath

If you're ready for a cuter way to decorate your front door, let's gather our gardening supplies and get started. First, clean up your garden tools to remove any dirt or debris from previous gardening endeavors. Optionally, you can paint the tools, either the whole thing or just the handle. This works especially well if your tools have wooden handles. You can gently sand down the wooden parts, if needed, before painting.

Once your tools are ready, lay them out around the grapevine wreath form so you can play with how you want the design to look. You can bundle them all on one side or spread them out around the wreath. Once you have them in place, use the floral wire to attach them to the wreath. Then you can take your artificial greenery and attach bits and pieces around using hot glue. This is your basic garden wreath. You can leave it as-is, or continue with a few optional add-ons to spruce it up.

To add to it, you can use bows and artificial flowers, attached with hot glue. Use some bright ribbon for a pop of color, or opt for burlap to stick with the rustic, natural vibe. You can also swap out the greenery for reindeer moss. In addition to gardening tools, you can also attach an old pair of gardening gloves and even a few mini terracotta pots. You can also get creative with the wreath frame and use an old gardening hose instead of a grapevine wreath. Alternatively, use a wire wreath frame and wrap it in burlap to create your base before adding things on.
