If you have a garbage disposal in your sink, you'll know how important it is to ensure it is clean and well-maintained to keep it in tip-top condition and working correctly. There are plenty of products and options for cleaning your sink's disposal system, but as Van Sant Law states, garbage disposals are dangerous and contain sharp blades. So after being advised to not put your hands anywhere near them, how can you be sure it is properly clean?

There are products that you can pour down the sink that claim to break down bacteria and clean the inner workings of the disposal system, and all you can do is trust that they are working. However, several Amazon users stated that liquid drain cleaners tend to be ineffective and fail to remove bad odors. This is less than ideal, so how is a similar problem to be avoided in our homes?

Foam is best

When it comes to products for cleaning your garbage disposal, there are many different options. There are liquids, sachets, powders, tablets, and pods. Some of them boast a foaming ability too, but what is the purpose of the foam? Summit Brands says that their foaming products give a thorough deep clean that cleans the whole system properly, including the pipes. It neutralizes odors and the foam gets into hard-to-reach areas that other liquid cleaners or non-foaming powders might otherwise miss.

Affresh Appliance Care had plenty of happy customers when using their foaming tablets, mainly due to the ease of use and effectiveness of the product. Putting the product into convenient, individual tablet form means no more measuring out of messy powders, just drop it in and it gets to work straight away, foaming up and cleaning all those hard-to-reach places you can't see where bacteria might build up and creating bad odors.

DIY garbage disposal tablets

Some people worry about the amount of chemicals we are pouring into our water system and prefer to be as eco-friendly as possible, If you prefer to make your own then you know exactly what goes into them, look no further than Mom 4 Real. The method for these tablets requires you to gather; 2 cups of baking soda, 1 cup of salt, ¼ cup of distilled water, ⅓ cup Castile Soap, 20 drops of lemon essential oils, an ice cube tray or silicone mold, a bowl, a storage tub, and a whisk.

Put the dry ingredients into the bowl and mix them together. Then add the wet ingredients and whisk well to combine. Once the mixture can be squeezed together and hold its shape it's ready to put into the mold. Scoop into the mold and leave them overnight to dry out and harden. The next day, pop them out and put them in a container. When it's time to use one, put one in your garbage disposal and turn on the water while running the disposal system. After 30 seconds everything should be clean and odor free.
