TikTok Wants You To 'Air' Your Duvet Cover And Home Experts Agree
Washing your duvet regularly is an essential part of keeping your bedding feeling, looking, and smelling fresh. If you're in need of a mid-week pick-me-up between washes, however, there's another approach you can take that doesn't require you to waste water or detergent on an unnecessary load of laundry. Instead of going through the process of cleaning your duvet more often than needed, consider the Scandinavian method of airing out your bedding when it needs a bit of a refresh.
TikTok creator Cecilia Blomdahl has made waves with a video showcasing her approach to better sleep while living in Svalbard, one of the closest habitable locations to the North Pole. As frequently as possible, she airs out her bedding in the arctic air to help it re-fluff and feel cool when it's time to settle down for the night. While Blomdahl has access to a unique, ultra-chilly environment, you don't need to weather an ice storm to try out this method for yourself — all it takes is your duvet and a bit of space.
How to air your duvet
In her TikTok video, Cecilia Blomdahl removes all of her top layers of bedding and hangs them on a balcony in the chilly air for a few hours before bringing them in to make her bed for the night. This, of course, is a Scandinavian hack for a reason. Cold, dry air is the best environment for this method, especially if you're a warm sleeper. But it doesn't mean that it's a necessity to still get good results.
If you live in a warmer place, you can still hang your bedding out on the balcony or a railing for a few hours to help it re-fluff and feel fresher, though it's important to take certain weather conditions into account. It's best to avoid doing this if it's ultra-humid or rainy, if there's a wealth of pollen or dust in the air, or if you're worried about picking up a few insect hitchhikers while your bedding sits outside.
If this is your situation, try airing out your duvet indoors. It might not feel quite as fresh, but if you're able to drape your duvet over a piece of furniture or string it up on a clothesline for a few hours, it can still help to release any trapped moisture and re-fluff the insert.
Why this works
This hack is incredibly simple, but experts agree that it can help you get a good night's sleep and extend the lifespan of your bedding. According to sleep expert Walt Pickut, the air outdoors can help any trapped moisture and sweat evaporate, while exposure to the sun can act as a natural disinfectant to fight any germs.
"This practice keeps your bedding feeling and smelling fresher, providing a more comfortable and inviting sleep environment," Pickut said in an interview with Homes & Gardens. "We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, so investing time and effort in optimizing our sleep environment is time well spent."
Unmaking and remaking your bed might be a bit of a tedious process, but the benefits are clear. Airing out your linens is a great way to create a more comfortable, healthy, and clean place to rest at the end of the day, all without having to constantly rely on your washer to deliver that fresh bedding feeling.
