The Clever Hack That Prevents Your Seat Cushions From Slipping

Nothing is more annoying than sitting down on a chair, and the cushion slipping underneath you. From there, you might have to shift around while situating the cushion to a spot where it stays in place and you're finally comfortable. Fortunately, we found the perfect hack to stabilize your seat cushions and keep them from slipping. All it takes is some non-slip, rubber-like material that's non-adhesive, kind of similar to the mesh that you would place inside drawers and cabinets. It has the almost sticky quality of gripping the smooth surface and keeping the cushion in place.

If you have cushions that have ties attached to their back corners, you might fasten those to the rungs or some other spot on the chair frame. It's okay if the cushions don't have ties, or if you're applying this tip to the cushions on seats that don't require them. Instead, you would first take a non-slip sheet and cut it, making it the same size and shape as the seat. Then, place it firmly on the seat and make sure there are no wrinkles, and set the cushion on top, applying some pressure. Due to the friction on the cushion and its adherence to the seat, you now have a non-skid, comfortable spot to sit on.

Apply this hack to various seats

As you can see, using the non-slip material can be applied to your dining room chairs or any other chair that has a smooth surface. So you can try placing the mat or some other non-slip material on rocking chairs or even stools that have backs. As long as you can cut the material into the same size and general shape as the seat — and as long its surface allows for it — you can use a sheet of non-slip material.

If you have a finished wood or a smooth stone bench, you can place the mat across the seat and add your cushion. In fact, you might even try this on your outdoor chairs and benches where cushions are likely to slide off. If the material gets dusty, you can always rinse it off and let it air dry, or replace the sheet or mat with a new one.

Do you have a couch or loveseat that has a cushion that won't stay put when you get up? Remove the seat cushion and if necessary, pull the back cushions out of the way. Then place a long non-slip sheet or multiple sheets on the couch and put the cushions on top. There should be no more shifting after that.

The right materials and where to find them

Luckily, you can find a variety of non-slip, non-adhesive materials to use for this hack. For instance, the backing that would normally go under your rug to keep it from slipping works perfectly on seat cushions. It won't damage the material of your cushions or the chair's surface, and you can trim it down to the size that you need. Eventually, this rubber material loses its gripping properties, but at least, it's replaceable. Just like with rugs, this material also works best on smooth surfaces.

You can also use a shelf liner mesh that's made from PVC, silicone, or rubber. Like the rug backing, you can cut it down to any size and shape to provide a non-slip surface for your seat cushion. Furthermore, you can find this type of shelf liner or rug backing at any hardware store like Home Depot or Lowe's, or even at Walmart or Target, or you can order both types on Amazon.

If you want to try a thicker material that won't have to be replaced as often, you opt for a silicone pad that you use for protecting a surface from hot dishes. However, you'll need the type that has texture on it, which keeps the pad — and therefore, the cushion — from slipping. Plus, you can wash the pad, which helps it to retain its stickiness. You can find these pads at any home goods establishment or department store.
