How Joanna Gaines Turns Potted Herbs Into Beautiful Kitchen Wall Art

Having fresh herbs growing in your kitchen won't only benefit your cooking, it can create a unique decorative feature in the space. Joanna Gaines from HGTV's "Fixer Upper" and Magnolia Network's "Fixer Upper: Welcome Home" has been the source of design inspiration since exploding on the scene with the first episode. Her distinctive farmhouse style infuses charm, but she never forgets about the functionality that each room needs.

On her Instagram, Gaines shows off a set of potted herbs hanging on the wall in a kitchen she designed for a client on "Fixer Upper: Welcome Home." The simple design features a custom plant shelf with room for nine pots. Brackets attached to the wall have three bars with circular openings to hold the clay pots, each one bursting with a little bit of greenery. The shelf keeps the herbs in close reach for cooking while also adding a living pop of color to the kitchen. The simple solution ends up being a standout feature.

Growing kitchen herbs

Growing your own herbs is a simple process, even if you don't think of yourself as having a green thumb. Most herbs need lots of sunlight to grow, which means they'll need at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. This means you'll want to place your herb garden close to a window or else supplement it with electric grow lights.

It's also important to consider watering. Having a shelf that allows the water to fall is a better option than a solid shelf the pots sit on. After watering, the excess runoff can pool on the shelf, warping or staining the surface. With the setup Joanna Gaines created, the herbs are hovering above each other. Placing herbs that prefer drier soil, such as rosemary and thyme, on the top of the shelf ensures they won't get any excess water when from other herbs. Similarly, herbs that prefer more water, such as mint and chives, will love the excess that drips down from the plants above.
