Ty Pennington Explains The Benefits Of Using Magnetic Tile

When it comes to home transformation, former "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" star Ty Pennington knows exactly how to achieve a new look in an efficient way. That's why he's such a fan of magnetic tile. Pennington lauded the benefits of using magnetic in an episode of his HGTV series "TY Breaker" noting its ease of installation and removal.

"The cool thing is you don't have to have it sealed or grouted," Pennington said in Episode 6 of Season 1, "A New Level to Entertain."And another cool thing is once you get tired of this pattern, you can switch it out to any other tile you want."

In this episode, Pennington helped a couple update the first floor of their new Atlanta home by giving their vintage-looking bar a facelift to make it look more modern. To do this, Pennington suggests installing a funky pattern using magnetic tile, which offers a hassle-free install and allows the couple to continually change it as the years go on so that their speak-easy area never looks outdated.

Magnetic tile is easy to install and cost efficient

With magnetic tile, you can forget about messy grouting work or harsh chemicals. Magnetic tile installation involves laying down a base mat or paint layer that contains iron particles. The magnetic tile is placed on top of it to create a bond with the underlayment that's so strong you don't have to use grout or sealants made with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This makes the project's completion time much quicker than a standard tiling job. The bond is so secure that the tiles are even waterproof.

Magnetic tile is also a DIYers dream come true that doesn't require extensive expertise to install. If you make a mistake by placing your tile in a crooked position, you can just pull it up and replace it. Not having to hire help to install it will save you big bucks. You can also save when it's time to change your flooring. Just pull up your old flooring with some magnets and lay down your new tiles.

The underlayment mats can also be placed right on top of the existing flooring, which eliminates the need to hire contractors to have your old flooring removed. This type of tile is also known to be durable and long-lasting with little maintenance needed to keep it looking as new as the day you bought it.

Magnetic tile is versatile and attractive

Magnetic tile is also incredibly versatile. It can be used for flooring and walls. Pennington and his "Ty Breakers" team have also found magnetic tile to be a great way to create a backsplash. It can be used in bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and other high-traffic areas.

Magnetic tiles come in all different kinds of materials, surfaces, and colors, so you're not just limited to porcelain. You can create laminate, stone, and wood flooring and finishes that easily allow you to transition from a vinyl floor to a carpeted one. These Cappuccino and Driftwood Gray wood finish magnetic tiles by Wallwork designs will achieve completely different moods in your home and cost $209.99 to cover 36 sq. ft.

You can also create all kinds of interesting patterns with magnetic tiles, such as herringbone or a diamond-shaped pattern like the one Pennington created for the Atlanta couple's bar. Because the tiles attract one another, you don't have unsightly grout lines. All you are left with are beautifully smooth and seamless surfaces.
