A shower bench can serve many purposes, whether for sitting, shaving, relaxing, or resting shampoo bottles. Many people buy white, slip-resistant rubber benches, but let's be honest: wood looks a lot better. If you're an experienced woodworker, you can construct one, just as TikToker @kutmaster_designs did using Spanish cedar.

Otherwise, you can let someone else do the work and buy a comparable wooden version. You can find plenty of styles on AmazonWayfair also sells them and allows you to filter your search by wood species, but you'll notice that Spanish cedar isn't an option. Other stores carrying wooden shower benches include Lowes, The Home Depot, and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Whether you're only willing to spend $50 or $350 on a bench, there are dozens of choices online to fit your budget.

Whichever way you get your preferred option — be it DIY or purchasing one — make sure you choose the right type of wood. Some species hold up better to constant moisture exposure than others. Proper care for your bench is also important to prevent mold and rot.

Best types of wood to use for a shower bench

The TikToker uses Spanish cedar for their custom-designed wooden shower bench, probably because of its natural resistance to rot and decay. It also dries well, which is an important characteristic for shower use. Many lumber yards and home improvement retailers sell Spanish cedar and other cedar varieties, should you decide to make the bench yourself. However, if you opt for a store-bought bench, you might face slim pickings. The good news is that teak wood might be available and is a great option for a shower bench.

Teak wood is readily available at places that sell cedar, making it easy to find for your DIY shower bench project. Due to its high oil content, it's also water- and rot-resistant and enduring — even more durable than cedar. Despite these benefits, it's important to note a few downsides to teak wood. For one, this species costs more than many other types of wood. It can also be challenging to find high-quality teak wood benches if that's what you're seeking.

How to care for a wooden shower bench

If you want your wooden bench to last a long time, it's important to put in the time and effort to maintain it. This includes cleaning it with the proper tools and drying it. You may even want to apply a treatment before allowing the bench to get wet to make it waterproof.

For a cedar bench, choose an indoor-outdoor sealant. Apply the treatment outdoors, in a well-ventilated area, and make sure it's completely dry before putting the bench in your shower. When cleaning a cedar bench, use warm water, a mild detergent, and a soft rag to remove any soap or shampoo residue. Do not use a brush or anything abrasive, which can damage the wood. After you've wiped the bench down, rinse it with warm water and towel dry it.

Since teak is naturally water-resistant, you won't need to apply special treatment to prevent water damage. However, you may want to apply teak oil to help it retain its color, keep it shiny, and better prevent mold growth. Make sure the bench is clean and dry first. Clean it with a mixture of ½ cup of water, ½ cup of vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of dish soap. Use a soft-bristle brush and avoid scrubbing too vigorously, which can scratch the wood. Then, rinse it well, let it air dry, or use a towel.
