Use Jasmine Roth's Hidden Build Idea To Add Functional Flair To Your Laundry Room

Having a laundry room in your home is a luxury that many homeowners take for granted. Not only does a laundry room offer a space for, well, laundry, but it can also be used to add function and organization to your home. If you are currently using your laundry space as a place to dump dirty clothes and hide away shoes and other items, it's time to start thinking a bit outside the box. Jasmine Roth, who you may know from HGTV's "Help! I Wrecked My House," did just that, adding a hidden desk to create a laundry room and home office combo.

Roth shared on her Instagram what looks like a normal, albeit gorgeous, renovated laundry room with extra cabinets for storage. But she surprises viewers by pulling the cabinet out to reveal a large, comfy chair that instantly turns the space into a usable office, homework spot, or art area. If you are ready to take your laundry room to new heights, here's how Roth did it.

How Roth created the hidden desk in the laundry space

When Jasmine Roth was tasked with renovating a smaller home, she had to get creative to ensure the homeowners, and their six kids, had everything they desired without feeling cramped. Without the designated areas to create a laundry room and office, Roth blended both. The best part of this transformation is that the space she had to create the laundry/office hybrid was actually quite small. To make the most out of the space she had, Roth opted for a stacked washer and a dryer and created an "L" shape with the cabinets to optimize counter space and storage.

Roth inserted the hidden desk in the middle of the longer countertop area. She created a faux cabinet, but made sure to keep the storage optimal by inserting a hollowed out space at the bottom to hold a wicker basket. Plus, to make up for any lost storage that the desk chair took up, Roth added upper cabinets to hold items like detergent and even a hanging space to dry clothes.

What to consider when adding a hidden desk in your home

This isn't the first time HGTV's Jasmine Roth has added a hidden desk to her renovation. During Season 3 of "Help! I Wrecked My House!," she also revealed a desk hidden in the homeowner's playroom. "If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I love anything hidden!," Roth said about the reno. To create a similar look in your home, first figure out the space that makes the most sense for your family. If you have kids about to become school-aged, the area where they play can be easily transformed into a homework station with the addition of a hidden desk. If you need a space to catch up on emails while still being close to your family, consider an area in your kitchen instead.

Once you have your space figured out, you'll likely want to connect with a professional. While Roth makes it look easy, inserting a faux cabinet can be a big job. If you do choose to DIY it, make sure you are measuring out your cabinets correctly and adding a desk chair that you will actually want to sit in (i.e. big enough to be comfortable for all ages).
