Hide Dated Mirrored Closets With An Elegant Curtain Idea

Mirrored clothing cupboards are a remnant of 1980s interior design. Some people love them for the innovative space-saving solution, while others aren't fond of the outdated look. Removing the glass exterior takes great care, and replacing the slides with wood is a big job. If you want to give your mirror closet doors a modern upgrade, but don't want to spend the time or money on a major renovation, the solution is simple — cover them up. Rather than replacing them with an entirely new material, hide unwanted decor with a simple but elegant curtain DIY hack.

Curtains are a staple in every home. They're used to make a statement, add a pop of color, and of course control light. However, you may never have thought to use them somewhere other than the window to offer a no-build option to conceal unpopular furnishings. Check out how to achieve this TikTok-inspired closet hack with a few hardware supplies and your favorite drapes.

Preparing to hide the mirrored closet

A drapery wall is one of the most creative ways to decorate with curtains. It adds an accent while simultaneously disguising unwanted features. Before starting on this project, measure the area you want to cover so you have enough fabric. With the chosen drapes in hand, gather a rod, the required hardware, a level, and an electric screwdriver. TikToker @rosadelee used a long dowel from the hardware store and a few hat hooks to secure hers. If you choose this in place of a classic rod, there are wooden poles for $3.57 per linear foot available at Home Depot. Hooks are available in a two-pack at Dollar Tree for $1.25. Now, it's time to hide some mirrors.

The hardest part of this project is lining up the mounts for an even assembly. Use a level, measuring tape, and pencil to mark off these spots on the wall. The TikToker started just above the top of the closet doors but found raising the curtains closer to the ceiling gave a more elegant look. Use the electric screwdriver to secure the mounts, thread the dowel through the curtains, and hang them in their chosen destination. To avoid landing in a tangled mess as you dress each morning, be sure to line up each drapery opening with the closet door. This is one of many creative bedroom design ideas to liven up the space. The finished look is a romantic flowing fabric wall and no more 80s decor.
