How To Turn A Woven Blanket Into Chic Wall Decor

Have you ever found a blanket and thought it was too stylish to just drape over furniture or store folded up in a linen closet? Even if you store blankets in a stylish way, some throws just deserve to be displayed and seen, and a big trend in interior design is hanging fabrics, tapestries, and even blankets on your wall. Whether it's for a print, pattern, or color scape that matches your aesthetic, using blankets as an interest piece, accent wall, or artwork is an ideal option that will give any wall texture and dimension. You may be wondering how you can hang a blanket or tapestry on your wall so that it remains in place and has a clean finish. There are several ways to display them, including using a wooden rod, frame, or magnets for easy removal, should you want to swap out the blanket.

So you have your woven blanket and a wall where you want to hang it. How do you go about securing a thick piece of fabric to hooks or finding a method that ensures your piece will stay where you need it to? That just comes down to how you want the finished result to look. If you prefer a hidden hanging system, that may require hooks, a discreet bar, or even the magnet hack. Otherwise, you can make the actual hanger just as much a part of the design as the blanket itself.

Attach a curtain rod or stick to the blanket

One great tip for hanging rugs on the wall as artwork that works for blankets, too, is to use curtain rods. By attaching fabric loops onto the back of your blanket, you can slide a stick or curtain rod through. To sew these loops, you just need a few strips of fabric that can be anywhere from 2 to 5 inches across. These should be thick so that they can hold the weight of the blanket when you hang it.

The length of your loops will vary, depending on the hanging style you choose. For example, if you decide on a hidden stick that can be hooked onto the wall behind the blanket, your loops only need to be large enough that you can slide a yardstick through them. If you're hanging your blanket by a curtain rod that is mounted above the blanket, your loops will need to be longer to allow the blanket to hang down.

For the hidden hook design, secure five to six fabric loops just under the top edge and slide your stick through. Add some hooks to the wall and place the stick on these. For the curtain rod, sew the loops to the top edge of the blanket. The blanket will hang down like a tapestry with the rod showing. This is a good opportunity to pick an ornate curtain rod or opt for a rustic wooden rod to match your aesthetic.

Use magnets or frame the blanket

The magnet trick involves securing a kitchen magnet like the IKEA KUNGSFORS along the wall. This can be secured with screws or a Command strip if you prefer not to drill into your wall. Purchase steel flat brackets and attach these to the back of your blanket using rivets to secure the brackets. Glue may be fine to use on lighter blankets instead of rivets. This hack gives off a tapestry effect, but the blanket is easily removed if you want to swap it out, clean it, or take it down completely. Like the clever curtain rod hack to hang blankets and quilts where they can be easily grabbed for warmth, this option helps your blanket serve multiple purposes rather than just as a tapestry.

Framing your blanket is another clever way to hang it, and this will bring more of an artwork aesthetic to the whole thing. Finding a frame that borders a full size blanket may be tricky, so consider making your own using 1x2 strips of wood (or larger pieces like 2x6's, which you can saw down). Cut the wood down to fit your throw, and connect the frame edges using brackets. Then, lay the blanket inside the frame and use a thick foam board or piece of plywood you've trimmed to fit the back. You can glue this layer to the blanket or use nails to secure it before adding hooks to the back to hang.
