Dollar Tree Finds That Are Perfect For Above-The-Toilet Storage

Smaller bathrooms often lack storage space, making it challenging to organize without interrupting your interior design. The secret to good organization and storage is to take advantage of any available space. One potential spot you shouldn't overlook is the area around your toilet. If you've been investigating how to make the most of space above the toilet, you've probably seen lots of tailor-made shelving and cabinet units, but these solutions can be pretty pricey. Fortunately, it's easy to stay within a small budget by DIYing over-the-toilet storage solutions using products from a store like Dollar Tree.

Below are nine Dollar Tree-inspired bathroom storage ideas from various social media platforms. These projects are doable on the cheap when using dollar store items and provide ample space to store spare towels, toilet paper, and other bathroom essentials. Most of these projects cost between $5 to $10, which is considerably less than investing in a specialized shelf installation. Each idea will help you keep clutter off bathroom counters and out of cabinets, and provide more room to work with. There are lots of Dollar Tree items that can double as perfect toilet paper storage, or cute spots to stash spare hand towels, wipes, etc., above the toilet — you just need to know how to hack them. Read on to learn what products to use, how they'll accentuate your space, and other useful tips for making your project as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional.

Hot glue wood craft materials into a DIY toilet shelf

The Dollar Tree carries wood pieces for crafts year-round, including Crafter's Square Wood Planks in square and rectangular shapes. Hot glue these wood planks to Crafter's Square Wood Dowels to make multi-tiered storage for decor, hand towels, lotions, and other items wanted within easy reach. If you want to skip some steps and avoid having to use a saw, you could probably also use the Dollar Tree Crafter's Square Rectangular Wooden Crates to assemble a tiered organizer in the same way. Leave the wood unpainted for a natural look, or paint over it with acrylic craft paint to better match the rest of your bathroom decor. You can also place this design on countertops so you can easily organize more small bathroom and toiletry essentials, or screw it to the wall.

Hang mesh bags from a rail or rack to create toilet paper storage

A TikToker discovered it's easy to hang Dollar Tree's Mesh Laundry Bags from a pre-installed metal towel bar using Home Collection Clear Plastic Shower Curtain Rings. If you, like most people, don't have towel rods above your toilet, the Tool Bench(R) Hardware Wall-Mountable Metal Hanger with Hooks makes a good substitute. Ensure the hooks are at least 20 inches above the toilet, so the hanging mesh bags don't touch the top of the toilet tank. Try hanging other wall decor, like plastic vines and seasonal ornaments, to add a personal touch to this basic but clever concept. This is one of multiple Dollar Tree DIYs that make storing toilet paper cute, easy, and affordable

Repurpose office organizers into floating shelves above a toilet

If you happen to already have an over-the-toilet cabinet with a space on the side that's around 10 inches wide, then head over to Dollar Tree's office supply section. The Assorted Jot Iridescent Letter Trays come in four vibrant colors. At the moment, the marble ones shown in this video seem to be sold out, but if the bright colors aren't to your liking, you can always spray paint the trays, just make sure to use a product that's designed to hold on plastic, such as Krylon COLORmaxx Paint. If you don't want to drill into your wall you can try mounting the trays using some Super Glue Pre-Cut Foam Mounting Tape. The only caveat is the shelves won't carry much weight. Use them to hold small decor, toilet paper rolls, and other lightweight items. Ensure the self-adhesive fasteners hold firm by cleaning the wall and pressing the mounting tape firmly against it for at least 30 seconds.

Create a towel shelf caddy out of wire shelf dividers

The Essentials White Wire Cabinet Shelves are popular enough to be available year-round. Grab a stack of two or more, attach them together with zip-ties, bend the legs up slightly, and secure them to the wall using adhesive hooks (like Command's Medium Designer Hooks), or Jot Clear Push Pins. The white version of these wire racks seamlessly fits alongside popular bathroom fixture materials, since sinks and bathtubs are often white ceramic — but you can of course opt to spray paint them. Rolled washcloths and hand towels easily fit on the legs of these wired shelves, creating the perfect spot to store fresh towel sets.

Layer candle trays to make tiered shelving above a toilet tank

There are other DIY shelf ideas for toilet tanks that don't involve wood materials. You can glue (or screw) the Gold Rectangular Plastic Charger Trays overtop matching Dollar Tree's Round Metal Candle Holders to make elegant shelves for luxuriously styled bathrooms. The narrow trays are good for holding small candles or Classic Counter Top Glass Cookie Jars with Metal Lids filled with small bathroom items, like cotton swabs or Q-tips. If you aren't a fan of gold, wait for other charger tray colors, such as the Rectangular Silver Charger Plates, to come back in stock. And if you want a more stable shelf that's capable of holding a little more weight, consider doubling up on the number of candle holders and placing them at the ends of the trays — or ditch the candle holders completely and use something like these White L Shelf Brackets to mount the charger trays directly onto the wall.

Hang wire baskets on glass holders to brighten a room and add storage behind a toilet

Another hanging basket idea is to combine Essentials Spring Fling-Themed Wire Storage Baskets (or any other wire baskets currently in stock) over Luminessence Glass Mirror Candleholders for a glam look. The creator in this video glues the mirrors together and attach the picture wires using E6000. While E6000 is has a lot of tensile strength, we'd recommend you play it safe and either leave the frames on the mirrors so as to be able to attach mounting hardware with screws, make generous use of strong Command Large Picture Hanging Strips from Amazon, or attach the mirrors to the wall with pro-grade mirror adhesive like the Seal Bond Mirror Mastic (just be aware that this isn't a renter-friendly mounting method). Also, be careful not to overload the baskets with heavy items. Put this reflective piece behind a toilet to add useful storage, reflect light, and make a small bathroom appear bigger and brighter.

Combine cooling wire racks and metal trays to make industrial storage for above the toilet

Repurpose more alternative items into bathroom storage, such as Cooking Concepts Metal Cooling Racks and Jot Multifunctional 3-Section Wire Mesh Desk Organizers. Purchase both items in a stainless steel color, and use Tool Bench Hardware Nylon Cable Ties to secure the organizers along the rods of the cooling rack. This creates multi-tiered narrow shelving that can hang behind a door or on the wall behind a toilet. Decorate the wiring with artificial greenery or other embellishments to add creative flair or leave it alone for an industrial aesthetic. Due to the narrow shape of the desk organizers, you'll only be able to store small items and decor inside.
