Are you dreaming of one of those princess bedrooms that are fit for royalty, without the sky-high designer price tag? All you need to create the vintage-inspired bedroom canopy of your dreams are some thrifted linens and a little bit of DIY ingenuity. With a few simple steps, you can create a dreamy canopy that hangs above your bed to add romance and whimsy to your space. No fancy materials are required, just lots of fabric, an eye for beauty, and some push pins.

The idea is to use the pins to attach different types of fabric to the wall and ceiling above the bed. Favor lightweight fabrics like tulle, chiffon, or even voile to make sure that the DIY canopy stays in place over time and doesn't weigh down too heavily on the pins. Use a mix of fabrics so that it becomes a multi-layered, almost cloud-like dreamy installation that hangs above your bed. Some sections of the fabric will hang nicely on the sides and back of the bed, with much of the fabric hanging right above your head. This canopy is sure to add a bit of whimsy to your home with its draped fabric ceiling look

How to DIY a canopy bed

Start with the two panels that you want to hang on the sides of the bed head. Lace or tulle would work well because they're see-through and therefore won't block out too much of the light. Simply secure each panel to the ceiling on each side of the bed with push pins, and tie them in the center like in the video. Next, attach short sections of fabric hanging down from the ceiling to act as the front of the canopy (about 15-20 inches). Once that's done, attach a larger piece of fabric from the ceiling and stick it behind your headboard.

After these main sections are done, you can improvise to create as much texture as you'd like with the other panels of fabric that you have. The more layers you create, the more fancy and elevated your DIY canopy will look. You can also add to it over time as you thrift more pieces of linens, or cut some larger panels into smaller sections. Consider using some Jam Paper white push pins instead of regular colorful or black ones so that the attachments can blend into the fabric and ceiling.

You can choose all white fabric to create a whimsical look, or alternate with some other colors. Pastel pinks, purples, and blues can tie in well with the white to create a delicate princess look. You can also repurpose some string lights usefully by attaching some to the ceiling and letting them fall behind the headboard.
