The Tastiest Tomato You Can Grow Is Also One Of The Easiest

If you're new to growing tomatoes or you just want a variety that's fuss-free and highly productive in your summer vegetable garden, cherry tomatoes are certainly your best bet. These plants don't require a lot of maintenance, and they'll just keep on giving. They're perfect for snacking and throwing into salads. Among all the many different varieties available, there's one that stands out for both taste and ease. 'Sungold' is one of the absolute tastiest tomatoes you can grow and, as a bonus, it's also the easiest. Even though tomatoes may not be the best choice for beginner gardeners, 'Sungold' may just surprise you with how easy it is to grow.

According to a taste testing event conducted by Iowa's Linn County Master Gardeners with over 100 participants, the testers chose 'Sungold' as one of the top five tastiest tomato varieties from over 39 different types of both heirlooms and hybrids. That's a pretty good result since 'Sungold' is a hybrid and all the others in the top five were heirloom types, which are usually known for their exquisite flavor. It's also quite surprising since 'Sungold' is not a red tomato but rather ripens to a beautiful golden orange color. This early season F1 hybrid is a vigorous indeterminate grower and produces small oval fruits that are firm and meaty. These are actually one of the sweetest tomatoes you're ever going to taste. Plus, their low acid content also means you won't be left wondering why your garden tomatoes taste so sour.

'Sungold' tomatoes are so easy to grow

To grow 'Sungold' cherry tomatoes in your vegetable garden, all you need is plenty of sunshine and a very sturdy support system. Like most indeterminate varieties, these vining plants will grow quite tall (over 6 feet), so you want to trellis them to keep the vines off the ground. This is one of the handiest hacks to remember when growing tomatoes, as providing them with adequate support increases airflow and makes the fruits easier to harvest. You don't have to worry too much about diseases attacking your plants either because this hybrid is resistant to common problems like fusarium and verticillium wilt, and even tobacco mosaic virus. These tomatoes will continue to produce those tasty morsels right up until the first hard frost hits. For optimum taste, wait for them to turn a pale orange color before harvesting.

Keep your plants well-watered, giving them around 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Apply this directly to the soil to prevent the leaves from getting wet. It's also a good idea to mulch your plants with straw to help keep the moisture in the soil. To keep your plants growing strongly, remember to give them some supplemental fertilizer, either by side-dressing with an organic one higher in phosphorus than nitrogen, or a natural liquid feed such as fish emulsion. Growing this tomato variety in a cage also means that no pruning is required, making it even easier to get tons of luscious fruits from your plant.
