If you're a proud, self-proclaimed Dollar Tree DIYer, then you know that it's one of the best places to buy the materials you need to add more storage to the kitchen. What's especially helpful is if you can use these DIY projects to create storage space in unlikely places, like the little shelves you might put on the front of your refrigerator. And given how close most refrigerators are to the stove in many kitchen setups, such tiny shelves are pretty perfect for keeping items like spices, measuring spoons, and creamer packets or K-cups close at hand.
You probably also know that many of these projects start with objects that are intended to stash something different from the purpose you have in mind. In the case of this DIY, you're going to get Jot wire mesh pencil holders and Jot three-compartment wire mesh desk organizers from Dollar Tree and turn them into fridge-front storage units. While the mesh pencil holders should serve most of the purposes you'll need them for, do know that there are also some larger mesh accessory cups available as well. That size of mesh container is ideal if, for example, you have designed an at-home coffee station that sits right next to the refrigerator, and you need someplace to store coffee filters or tea bags. This project also requires a hot glue gun and Crafter's square round button magnets.
Putting the spice storage racks together
You'll start by using the glue gun to attach at least two magnets to the backs of the round pencil holder cups and four to the wire mesh organizers. Because the desk organizers are long — about 11 inches — you'll want to space the four magnets evenly across their length to ensure they can hold the baskets and contents. If you've ever put a refrigerator magnet on a heavy piece of paper only to watch it slowly slide down the front of the fridge, you know firsthand how the weight of objects can overwhelm these magnets. Once the glue on the magnets dries, fix the containers to the fridge, then fill them with spices and other kitchen objects.
You can also MacGyver this concept a bit by gluing some magnetic strip tape from Towjug Store on the inside of your cupboards and hanging the spice storage there. For this, you'll do the project as you normally would. Next, you'll need to put some strips of magnetic tape on the inside of your cupboard doors. You'll want enough strips of magnetic tape to accommodate the number of mesh basket shelves you've made. Once the magnetic tape is fastened to the insides of the cupboards, you'll hang the mesh spice holders to the magnetic strips. You'll find that this is a genius way to store spices if there's no room for your spice rack setup in front of the fridge.
