Build A Darling Mini Garden Trellis With An IKEA DIY

If you have a small, open space on your patio and you don't know what to fill it with, this DIY mini trellis could be the perfect solution. It doesn't need much floor space, but fills the vertical space with vibrant life. Making the trellis takes a trip to IKEA, some hole-drilling skills, and a few hours of your time. You should treat DIY wood planter boxes before growing anything, so spray each separate piece of wood with wood sealant before assembly.

Start with the HUTTEN 9-bottle wine rack, and build the three wine rack shelves. After that, assemble the two end frames, but keep them separate. Instead of placing the racks inside the end frames, mount a rack onto the top of each support frame. Grab a KNAGGLIG pine box, and fix one trellis to the short end of the pine box and the other to the long side at a 90-degree angle to create a corner. Fix the remaining rack to the top of both to create a mini pergola.

Drill drainage holes in the bottom of a plastic TROFAST storage box. Place it into the KNAGGLIG base, and fill with soil. Choose plants that are perfect for using with a trellis to grow closest to the upright section, as they'll make use of the climbing struts you've provided for them. Move the DIY trellis into position and enjoy watching the climber thrive.

Exploring the versatility of your DIY mini trellis

For taller climbers, you'll need to provide extra height. Purchase extra HUTTEN wine racks and follow the same pattern to create a taller trellis. As the structure gets taller, you may need to add a support strut on the unattached corner to provide stability.

This cute mini trellis is quite versatile, and not limited to outside use. Once you've made a couple for your patio, go ahead and make some to use inside. Choose some vining plants that will give your indoor space a fresh look, and position them near bright, indirect light. While it's not a big deal outside, for inside use, you'll need to contain water overflow from the drainage holes. Buy a lid for the TROFAST storage box, turn it upside down, and place it into the pine box. Fill it with some smooth stones to create a drip tray underneath the storage-box-turned-planter. Check that the box sits level on the stones before filling it with soil and plants.

To make this trellis and planter more versatile, get some IKEA ALEX castors and attach them to the bottom of the pine box. With wheels, you can move your mini trellis around easily to put your plants in the best position to thrive all year round.
