Make A Funky 70s Style Lamp With A Fun IKEA DIY
When you have a specific home décor goal, like a funky '70s-inspired aesthetic, it can be tough to find the perfect décor pieces in stores. If you are a bit crafty, though, you can often create pieces that turn out perfect for your space because you get to customize them to your exact style and needs. If you do love a groovy aesthetic, then a mushroom lamp may be the combination lighting and decoration item your space is missing. There are plenty of mushroom lamps that will look perfect in any room, but they can be pricey or just not quite what you are looking for. Luckily, there is a budget-friendly IKEA project that can leave you with a show-stopping lamp.
This project revolves around the uniquely shaped IKEA KÄLLARHALS vase, which costs $16.99 and comes in a bright orange color. The round form of the vase exemplifies the groovy '70s trend that has come back in style, which is the use of curved furniture. The vase makes up the lamp base, and the rest of the lamp is formed by placing an LED light inside the vase and finishing everything off with a bowl spray-painted to match the orange of the vase on top. You can use any light source and bowl, but the IKEA BJÖRKSPIREA tube light, which costs $19.99, and the BLANDA serving bowl, which costs $5.99, can be bought alongside the KÄLLARHALS vase to make things easier. Even adding in spray paint, this project could still be completed for under $50.
How to create the perfect mushroom lamp
To assemble the project, simply place the tube light inside the vase. The BJÖRKSPIREA has a base that does not fit inside the vase, but will allow the bowl to balance on top of the vase at a good height. If you use a different bowl or light, you may need to glue a block of wood or other solid material inside the bowl to achieve the right height. Just make sure the glue dries completely before you place the bowl on top, so it doesn't adhere to the vase and prevent you from accessing the tube light to turn it on and off. Alternatively, you can buy a lamp kit, often for under $15, to replace the tube light so you can secure everything in place and change the location of the lamp's light source from the vase to the bowl. Just remember to measure your vase and bowl to make sure the lamp kit and lightbulb will fit inside.
Another way to personalize this DIY lamp while sticking to your budget is by getting the colors just right. The orange lamp already fits as one of many colors to decorate with for a '70s aesthetic, but if you do not want to deal with trying to color-match the IKEA vase, or you just want another color, then you can choose a different color. Spray paint the vase and bowl for a cohesive look, or spray paint the bowl a different color for a color blocking effect similar to what was popular around the 1970s.
