Why Customers Are Enjoying IKEA's Space-Saving Sleeper Sofa

Nothing turns an overnight visit into a nightmare faster than your host showing you to a sleeper sofa. We get it. Not everyone has enough space to create a cozy guest room. But whether it's already been pulled out or there's a stack of pillows and blankets precariously set on one of the couch cushions you'll be tripping over later, there's more than one reason the horrible furniture mashup has such a bad reputation. The only way spending a night on a giant sleeper sofa could get any worse is if you've somehow been roped into helping your host move it into their new place first. The weird metal bar that kept pinching your fingers as you heaved it up a flight of stairs? Your back will get a chance to say hello to it later as you toss and turn for hours before groggily assuring your host the next morning that you slept great. Fortunately, IKEA has designed a space-saving solution that hundreds of customers actually love sleeping on.

The LYCKSELE LÖVÅS is a loveseat-sized sofa that unfolds into a full-sized bed. Instead of a single bar straight to your spine, several thick wooden slats fit neatly into the LYCKSELE's powder-coated frame to form a sofa seat and back when upright, and a supportive base when extended. The mattress is constructed of two pieces of thick polyurethane foam covered with several layers of smolder resistant lining, inner fabric, and 100% recycled ticking. Like many of IKEA's home decor essentials that are always worth buying, there are several washable cover options in natural cotton and quilted polyester that let you quickly swap styles.

Customers love the LYCKSELE LÖVÅS' comfortable mattress and colorful covers

So, why are people obsessed with this particular sleeper sofa? For starters, it takes up way less room and weighs a fraction of a traditional sleeper sofa. The frame clocks in at just under 62 pounds, which more than one customer said was extremely easy to assemble and move around. The mattress is under 4 inches thick, but the foam is so plush that it adds another 26 pounds. One happy customer said the slim profile is ideal if you're having trouble squeezing a larger mattress or sofa through super tight spots like a narrow door or hallway. Most customers described the mattress as very comfortable, but on the firmer side. A few suggested adding memory foam for better sleep, like the bestselling LINENSPA 2 Inch Gel Infused Cooling and Pressure Relieving Mattress Topper from Amazon. Although it folds out to accommodate two adults, the frame's petite profile worked for several people living in RVs, tiny homes, and other small spaces. IKEA says that although it isn't weight rated, the company doesn't recommend exceeding 300 pounds (excluding the mattress itself.)

The interchangeable covers also get extremely high praise. From a creamy natural color to bright multicolor stripes, soft quilted grays to bold mustard yellow, it's easy to find one that fits your style. Many customers mentioned the durability and excellent fit. One suggested adding IKEA's ULLERSLEV sheepskin and throw blankets to up the cozy factor. Others said the covers hold up beautifully, even in pet-friendly homes. No matter which fabric you choose, each of the LYCKSELE covers are machine washable.

How we evaluated this product

Sleeper sofas aren't usually the hallmark of hospitality, so we really dug into the reviews to make sure this one was worth considering. A LYCKSELE LÖVÅS complete with frame, mattress, and cover retails for $449. On the whole, the sleeper sofa set received four star reviews or higher for its appearance, ease of assembly, product quality, and value for the money. Since you can purchase each piece separately, we made sure to consider individual product reviews as well. The LYCKSELE mattress has hundreds of five star reviews. The covers received an average of 4.4 stars. Customers are slightly more divided on the frame, which has fewer reviews overall. Although it receives four star reviews for its appearance and ease of assembly, the frame averages just 3.6 stars for overall quality and value for the money.

We also checked to see if the sleeper sofa had ever been recalled. In 2006, IKEA recalled a number of LYCKSELE sofas because customers could potentially be injured by a folding mechanism in the frame. It then redesigned the product to include safety covers, which now come standard. Even among the few negative reviews, there were no mentions of pinched fingers or other assembly injuries for this product.
