How Nate Berkus Uses Wallpaper To Make A Bold Statement In Small Areas

When it comes to interesting designs and making a statement, Nate Berkus knows how to add a wow factor to any space. One way he has been able to do that is with the help of wallpaper. Over the years, Berkus has shared a variety of different tips and tricks for how we can shake things up in our own homes, and one of his suggestions is picking wallpaper for smaller spaces, such as an entryway or a powder room.

As part of an interview he did alongside his husband Jeremiah Brent for Living Spaces, the designer said that he believes, "there's something that becomes really impactful about seeing an all-over pattern in a smaller scaled space." However, that doesn't mean that you can't use it in a larger room, but sometimes we forget that small spaces need some design love as well. Small spaces are perfect for experimentation, without impacting the rest of your home's decor choices.

Nate Berkus also took to Instagram to share his thoughts on wallpaper choices, where he showcased four different options that were each vibrant and bold in their own ways. As he pointed out, "whimsical, colorful, but never overpowering. Wallpaper options are the perfect balance between playful and polished.⁣" One of the boldest examples was in a powder room, which was covered in a pink, playful floral. It's a reminder that you can be bold even in a tiny bathroom setting.

Why Nate Berkus likes bold wallpaper in a powder room

Typically, a powder room is a small bathroom that doesn't have a tub or shower, and therefore, it won't get steamy and humid (moisture is usually the reason you'd avoid adding wallpaper to a bathroom). And with its smaller size and limited every day traffic, Nate Berkus suggests that this is a great place to experiment with designs and go bold with both prints and color. You don't necessarily have to consider the aesthetic of the rest of the home when planning the design for these smaller rooms.

This means that you can have fun with wallpaper designs in your bathroom and other smaller spaces. As Berkus has explained, it adds a surprising element to a home that guests might not expect. Plus, both powder rooms and foyers are often more minimal when it comes to the rest of the design details. This allows the wallpaper to make an impression without being overwhelmed by anything else in the room.

Wallpaper can be a great way to think outside of the box when it comes to design, especially if you want to skip the paint in a smaller space. Wallpaper can also be a great choice in full-sized bathrooms, however, you will either want to seal it with a varnish for added protection or choose something that is resistant to moisture. Think about what you want for the space, go bold, and have fun with your patterns.
