Nate Berkus Keeps His Home Organized And Clean With This One Daily Habit

The brisk pace of many people's days can often make you feel like cleaning is an uphill battle. This is especially true in the bedroom, which in the tasks of nightly slumber and getting ready for the day means your bedroom can become a sea of disorderly bedding, messy piles of clothes, and odds and ends like medication, water glasses, reading material, remotes, etc. on all available surfaces. HGTV's Nate Berkus, however, has an easy suggestion that can set the tone for an organized and neat space. Taking a few minutes to make the bed first off in your day not only makes your room neater in the moment, but can also create a bed you cannot wait to crawl into each night.

Berkus has often discussed his view of the bedroom as a sanctuary, a place for calm, order and quiet. A well made bed contributes largely to this feeling and takes only a few minutes to make happen in your morning routine. Combine this task with a quick reset that puts things back where they belong (the hamper, the bathroom, the bedside table) and your space will stay neat and welcoming whether you are spending your time there asleep or awake.

Crisp new linens every night

Nate Berkus discusses his daily routine in an Instagram post, which involves changing the sheets each morning when he makes the bed, switching out his own brand of bedding from Nate Home. Adding new bedding daily can assure that your sheets are clean, crisp and comfortable as a luxury hotel every time you crawl into them. Clean sheets daily are also great if you have allergies or pets.

While daily sheet changes can definitely create a lot of laundry, you can get a similar feel with less frequent changes by making sure to pull the sheets tight to remove scrunches and wrinkles as you make the bed for the day. A great hack that makes this easier is using a spatula — this unexpected kitchen tool will make your bed look hotel-perfect. You can also spritz them and other bedding with some linen spray to give them a fresh laundered scent. Berkus' fellow HGTV host Joanna Gaines has a great DIY linen spray made with lavender and lemon essential oils that would work perfectly to freshen your bedding.

Styling a bed you want to crawl into every night

In another Instagram post, Berkus offers other great suggestions for creating a beautiful bed and a dreamy bedroom you will never want to leave. It's not just important to make the bed, but also to consider how you make it. Berkus suggests following the secrets of designers, like adding several full size pillows along with a couple decorative throw cushions to the head of the bed. If you do not have a headboard to lean them against, you can use a bolster to provide support for them to remain upright.

After adding a coverlet or duvet, cuff the sheet over the top of the bedding, making the bed look posh, hotel-like, and picture perfect. Another step for a pretty bed is to include a throw at the foot of the mattress, which adds another layer of luxury, texture, and coziness.
