Easily Clean Dirty Window And Door Tracks With An Essential Tool You Already Own

Cleaning windows and doors is probably not one of your favorite household chores, but it's an essential part of keeping your home in good condition. Often the trickiest part is cleaning the gunk out of the tracks and making sure that they are free of dirt and grime. It can be hard to clean these tracks due to the awkward shape and structure of them. There are multiple crevices where dirt can gather that is difficult to reach. However, there is a simple tool you already have that you can use to solve this problem: a screwdriver.

By combining a screwdriver with the microfiber cloth you're likely already using to clean your windows, you can slide your way into the grimiest parts of the frame with no problem. Trying to just push a cloth into these crevices without a tool is a recipe for wasted work and an unclean home— all you're going to succeed at is dislodging the dirt and moving it around without properly getting rid of it. Instead, using a flathead screwdriver (or a butter knife will do the same job) is the best way to clean window tracks to fully remove any grime.

How to use a screwdriver to clean your window and door tracks

For this screwdriver hack, first, fully open your window or door so the entire track is exposed. Take your flathead screwdriver and carefully drag it along the gap in the track to remove any loose dirt or grime. It might be a good idea to have a little bowl or container that you can quickly flick the dirt into before giving it a second go. A great tip is to wrap a cloth around your screwdriver–this will avoid any sharp edges damaging your window track and will also help pick up any smaller specs of dirt.

This method will no doubt remove the majority of the dirt from your window and door tracks, but you'll probably still be left with dust. To get rid of any remaining loose dirt, use the brush attachment on your vacuum to pick up anything that has been dislodged but not yet removed — this should definitely do the trick. Finally, to get your window and door tracks looking sparkling clean once all of the dirt and dust has been removed, grab your cloth, spray it with an all-purpose cleaner, then glide it along the track. This will freshen your tracks and make them look as good as new.
