DIY A Stylish Plant Stand With A Few Affordable Repurposed Household Materials

With so many houseplants that are perfect for growing indoors, your home can very quickly turn into a mini nursery. But as most green thumbs will tell you, there's no such thing as too many plants. Rather than dial back your passion, a better approach is to figure out how to arrange your leafy family so that everyone has a good spot. That's what @hometalk did in a recent Instagram reel and the result was pretty eye-catching. They essentially created a super cute faux wooden plant stand from PVC pipe, varnish, and a couple of wood rounds — items you may have left over from your last home improvement project that you can repurpose for an affordable DIY. Otherwise, you can easily pick them up at Home Depot.

While one commenter noted the project might seem like a lot of work for something you could easily buy, it's still a rewarding DIY for those who enjoy crafting. The total cost is around just $40, with the main expenses being the PVC pipe, wooden rounds, glue, and varnish or wood stain. If you already have some of the materials on hand, it won't cost as much. It's worth pointing out that this stand isn't for your heavier plants. For them, you'll want to consider rolling plant stands that make moving your houseplants a breeze.

How to make your own plant stand (and make it your own)

If you're looking for unique ways to decorate your home with plants — and let's face it, who isn't — this clever DIY is one way to achieve that. Get yourself a piece of 3-inch PVC pipe that's a little over 2 feet long and rough up the surface with 40-grit sandpaper. The goal is to remove the shine and create random grooves along the length of the pipe. Wipe it down, then apply a coat of wood stain, following the direction of the sanding marks for a consistent look. Once the stain has dried, cut the pipe into 5-inch sections and set them aside for now. Next, take two 12-inch wooden rounds, glue them together with a strong all-purpose adhesive, add weight on top, and let them sit until they're well and truly stuck. Varnish the rounds, glue pipe pieces in a circle to the bottom of the rounds, and voila. You now have a plant stand that doubles as a conversation starter.

Of course, there's no need to follow the steps above to the letter. You can make this your own by using spray paint rather than varnish. And play with the colors: Go for a driftwood gray for coastal vibes, a rich espresso for modern spaces, or even a whitewash for farmhouse style. Keep in mind that to use it outside you will need to seal everything with polyurethane to make it weather-resistant. You can replace the PVC pipe with thick wood dowels or even upcycled chair legs, which you can cut to size or choose to leave as is for a taller plant stand. Instead of wood rounds, you could use tree rings. There are so many options, and so many plant stands to make.
