DIY A Chic Pottery Barn Wall Organizer Dupe Using Dollar Tree Finds
It's tough being an interior design enthusiast on a budget. You might wander through Pottery Barn and spot something stunningly simple and functional, only to cry a bit when looking at the price tag. Even something as straightforward as a wall organizer for photos and notes can somehow end up retailing for hundreds of dollars. Take the 36-inch Metal Framed Round Pinboard from Pottery Barn Teen, for example, which retails for $229. And yes, cheap stores like Dollar Tree carry some similar options, but they're usually made of basic cork and not so aesthetically pleasing. The good news is that with just a few Dollar Tree supplies, you can DIY your own pinboard that looks like a Pottery Barn dupe.
The idea is to use a hula hoop, jute cord, fabric, and a foam board from Dollar Tree to create a Pottery Barn-inspired wall organizer. To do this, you'll simply have to cut the foam board with an X-Acto knife to fit inside the hoop and cover it with some fabric using spray-on glue. And, because Dollar Tree's hula hoops are colorful and shiny, you'll cover it with some jute twine before attaching it to the foam board.
Besides glue and tools, you'll only spend about $5 on the Dollar Tree supplies needed. In addition, you can also repurpose fabric scraps, an old curtain, or a tablecloth to cover the foam board to stay on budget. If you have a few extra dollars to spend, purchase a piece of white tufting cloth from Kinjoek, which is easy to poke through with a pin without leaving marks. You can also purchase textured weave in other colors if you'd like to make your board look a bit different from Pottery Barn's.
How to DIY a wall organizer
Start this DIY by removing the colorful layer of plastic on the hula hoop. This will make it easier for the hot glue to adhere and for the jute cord to stay in place. A small cut with the X-Acto knife and your fingers should be enough to pull the layer off neatly. When the hoop is bare, attach one end of the jute cord to it using a dot of hot glue, and start wrapping it around tightly. Every few loops, add some glue to keep everything in place.
Next, place the foam board flat on a table, and the hoop on top of it. Using a pencil, trace the inside of the hoop onto the foam board, remove the hoop, and use that drawn-on guide to cut it into a circle using the X-Acto knife. Spray the foam circle with a layer of Gorilla contact adhesive or another type of spray-on glue for crafts. Place the fabric on the foam flat, pressing down to make sure the glue is adhering.
Finally, use hot glue to secure the twine-covered hoop around the foam board and cut the excess fabric around it. To attach your new pinboard to the wall, you can use Command Strips or a jute cord loop hot-glued to the back of the board, which you can then hook onto a nail in the wall. To elevate the look of this board, get some unique push pins to match your aesthetics, like these Antique silver sea life pushpins from Norma Jean Designs or these flower decorative pins from Dorbetar. This chic DIY is great for a bedroom, and it can also fit nicely with the designer dorm decor trend if your kids are off to college.
