The Under-Utilized Space In Your Kitchen That's Perfect For Mug Storage
Having enough kitchen storage can be a common problem. Even if you have a larger kitchen, if it hasn't been designed properly, then you may find yourself struggling to find places to store everything. Of course, smaller compact kitchens are more likely to suffer with this problem due to the lack of cabinet space, and it can be tricky to store items that you have a vast collection of — particularly mugs, if you're a tea or coffee lover.
A space that is under-utilized in most kitchens is the area above your refrigerator. More often than not, you will have a decent amount of space above it that you can use to store things. However, because it is higher than your countertops, people tend to forget it is there and useable. Of course, there are things that shouldn't be stored above your fridge, both for safety and practical reasons. But, if you have an overflow of mugs, then utilizing this vertical space to store them is a great way to prevent your countertops from becoming too cluttered.
Things to consider when utilizing the space above your refrigerator
Storing mugs on top of your fridge is a great way to utilize this commonly unused space. However, to make it look more organized and less cluttered, you can place your mugs in some kind of closed storage — a basket or crate, for example, to keep them looking neat and tidy. This handy kitchen storage hack may only apply to you if your coffee station or kettle is near your fridge. Ultimately, you probably won't want to store your mugs on top of your fridge if your coffee or tea area is on the opposite side of the room. But, if it is in close proximity, then having them within reaching distance is super useful. You may be tempted to move your kettle or coffee machine on top of your fridge to create your very own barista bar, but please try and avoid this. The vibrations from the compressor, which is inside of your refrigerator, can damage the components of your smaller appliances, and can ultimately break them over a period of time.
Another thing to note is that if your fridge is too high and it's a struggle for you to reach the top of it, then using it as a storage space isn't the most practical thing to do. The last thing you want to be doing is reaching for a step ladder every time you fancy a hot beverage.
