Turn An Old Plastic Container Lid Into Unique Countertop Organizer With An Easy DIY

If your countertop always ends up cluttered with everyday items (think makeup brushes, pens, kitchen gadgets, or even small charging cords), there's an easy fix that doesn't require spending a lot of money. Instead of tossing out old plastic container lids, you could keep one to help you make a chic rope basket that adds both texture and function to your space. This countertop organizer DIY lets you turn something you already own into something you'll actually use, and you can make a bunch as a great strategy for decluttering your home.

All you'll need is a plastic lid, hot glue, and a spool of thick jute or rope. That's it. The finished product looks surprisingly fancy, like something you'd find in a cute home decor store (but it costs next to nothing to make at home.) Whether you want to organize your vanity, declutter your desk accessories, or add a rustic accent to your bathroom, there are so many ways to use baskets in your home for stylish storage. Plus, it's a great way to give old materials another use rather than adding them to the recycling bin.

How to DIY a storage basket with rope and an old plastic lid

To start your countertop organizer, squeeze a small dot of hot glue in the center of the plastic lid. Press the rope's end firmly into it. Wind the rope around that starting point in a tight spiral expanding toward the lid's edge, gluing as you go until the one side is completely covered. Next, use the same technique to glue the rope up and around the lid's lip, creating a shallow bowl shape. Once you've covered the edge, flip the piece over and continue stacking the rope on top of itself to form the basket's height, lining the rope with hot glue to adhere it as you build it up.

For handles, simply form small loops at the top with the rope on either side and secure them with extra hot glue. From there, the possibilities are endless. Paint the rope white for a coastal look, line it with fabric, or even try adding some decorative stitching with your favorite thread colors. You could make a bunch and organize your entryway with a DIY wall basket to keep essentials together and tidy. Or, you can use your new organizer to store anything from keys and jewelry to craft supplies and small plants. Not only does this project cut down on waste, but it also adds warmth and handmade charm to any countertop, shelf, or workspace.
