How To Grow A Sacred Fig Tree In Your Container Garden

The sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) is native to Southeast Asia and gets its name from its deep spiritual and religious significance. Also known as the bodhi tree, the sacred fig tree is said to be the tree under which Buddha meditated to attain enlightenment. However, whether you are spiritual or not, you can enjoy the sacred fig tree in your home or yard. As this beautiful tree is only hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 10 to 12, growing it in a container allows you to protect it over the colder months. 

When growing a sacred fig tree in a container garden, opt for a soil-based potting mix. You can grow it in various types of pots, including wooden, ceramic, or plastic. However, when choosing the best pot for your fig tree, pick one that is at least 18 inches in diameter. Make sure that the container has good drainage by adding holes to the bottom. Place your potted sacred fig tree in a spot with bright, indirect light, or in partial shade with some protection from the afternoon sun. 

You should water your sacred fig tree regularly over the growing season, but watch out for the soil getting waterlogged. In fall and winter, it won't need that much water. It is a good idea to give your tree some feed at least three times a year, using a high-nitrogen soluble fertilizer and an organic feed in the spring. A higher phosphorus can then be used once its small fruit starts to appear. If the tree is not growing well and is showing signs of nutrient deficiency, you can feed it once a month. 

When it comes to pruning, you won't have to do much to keep your tree healthy and happy. Take off any overly long shoots in the winter and shape it to how you want it to look. Pruning its roots when necessary can prevent it from becoming pot-bound and promote healthy growth. As your sacred fig tree grows, you may wish to repot it when it gets bigger. However, do this gradually, repotting the tree every two or three years if needed.
