When updating your kitchen, there are all kinds of design tricks to modernize dated wood cabinets that you can try. However, even if you're set on replacing them, don't throw out those old cabinet doors. Instead, you can use the doors as material for a range of DIY projects including making your own custom, wall-mounted wine rack, just like HGTV's Erin Napier did on Season 1, Episode 9 of "Home Town."
By simply adding some form of hooks to your old cabinet door, you can craft a chic, minimalist wine rack that comes together in no time at all. So whether you're a seasoned wine connoisseur desperate for more storage solutions, or are simply searching for smart ways to repurpose old kitchen cabinets after a renovation, this DIY has you covered. Any type of cabinet door should work for this project, but when it comes to adding paint and screws, be sure to look up care tips specific to the material you are using. For example, there's far more prep work involved when painting laminate cabinet doors compared to wood or MDF.
How to build a DIY wine rack with an old cabinet door
To get started, remove your cabinet door by unscrewing it from the hinges. Then unscrew any knobs or handles from the door. If you like, you can fill in the old screw holes with spackle or wood filler and sand them down to achieve a uniform surface. Depending on the material you're working with, you may want to paint or stain the cabinet door as well to better fit your aesthetic. For cabinets that are particularly long, you can use some of the extra space to add decorative touches. One option, for example, is to paint a small rectangle with chalk paint at the top of the door. Once dry, you can use that space to write a nice quote or funny wine pun in chalk.
After the cabinet door is painted or stained to your liking (and fully dry), you can begin adding hooks to hold your wine bottles. Erin Napier used some spare brass pieces she had lying around but you can use these AQAREA Wall-Mounted Wine Hooks instead. Just spray paint them a brass color to mimic the look. Next, use a pencil to mark where each hook will go before attaching them with screws. Choose any layout you like for the hooks, just make sure there is enough room for your wine bottles to sit comfortably. Finally, use heavy-duty screws to mount your wine rack, making sure that you're screwing into a stud. Then you're done! As far as creative ways to DIY your own stylish wine rack go, this one is pretty easy to do.
