The Kitchen Is Perfect For Your Plant Propagation Station - Except This One Spot

Propagating is a fun and satisfying way to get more plants for free. However, whether you are a botany pro or still learning the difference between cuttings and divisions, you will probably benefit from a propagation station. A propagation station is essentially your own little plant lab where you can nurture your new plant babies and fill your home with more greenery. They also look pretty cool, especially when you are propagating houseplants in water, and you can see all the roots develop. 

The location of your propagation station is quite important, as cuttings and new divisions need certain environmental requirements for them to take root and settle in. Most plants being propagated need bright, indirect light in a location with high humidity. The correct temperature is also crucial, with the best results occurring when the rooting medium is kept between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The kitchen can be a great place for your propagation station. However, you should avoid placing it above your refrigerator. This may seem like a perfect, empty space to fill with new plant babies, but they may not thrive or even survive here.  

When you propagate plants from cuttings and new divisions, you need to keep them warm so they will settle in and grow strong roots. This means that the top of your fridge is not a great location for them, because they will be exposed to cold air every time you open its door. Furthermore, having your propagation station on the top of your fridge may mean you forget to check in on your baby plants. It can be a chore to climb up there and bring your propagation station down for maintenance, which you need to do regularly for cuttings and new divisions. Successful propagation relies on constant watering, with the potting medium kept moist. If you forget you have put your plants up there, they probably won't do very well. 

Instead of putting your propagation station on top of your fridge, clear a space on your kitchen counters or shelves. Ensure that the space has the correct humidity and temperature needs and that it is somewhere you can see and easily access. Once your station is set up and ready to go, you will be propagating plants like an expert and creating a mini forest in your home.
