The Dollar Tree DIY For A Spooky Storage Box That Doubles As Home Decor
It's that time of year when you start to notice a chill in the air and spooky decorations popping up left and right. This can only mean one thing: Halloween is just around the corner. This is also the time of year when the seasonal aisles of the discount retailer Dollar Tree get a frightful makeover, complete with decorations, craft supplies, and even Halloween costumes and apparel. While some major stores see the Halloween season as an opportunity to charge an arm and a leg for festive supplies, Dollar Tree's selection of seasonal supplies is making headlines thanks to the store's wide selection and consistently low prices.
Some crafty Dollar Tree enthusiasts have even taken to social media to share videos of them transforming decorations from the store's Halloween selection into spooky and functional home decor. TikTok user Jay Munee DIY recently shared a popular video demonstrating how you can make wooden coffin shaped cutouts into a 3D storage box, complete with hinges and additional seasonal decor inside. This DIY is versatile, customizable, and requires no power tools, only common household craft items.
Luckily, this is an incredibly cheap and easy Halloween decoration to DIY. To complete this crafting project, all you will need is two of the coffin-shaped hanging signs from Dollar Tree, a pack of jumbo popsicle sticks, a pair of scissors, hot glue, a surface protector, two small hinges, and any other spooky decor you want to style your craft with. Here is how you can try your hand at this quick and inexpensive DIY at home, and style it around your house just in time for Halloween night.
How to make your own coffin storage box at home using Dollar Tree products
To begin, lay down a piece of paper or a small tarp to protect your work surface. Remove any tags from the coffin cutout, and measure the jumbo popsicle sticks against the sides of the coffin, marking with a pen where to cut so that the edges line up. The wood should be thin enough to cut with a standard pair of crafting scissors. Using the markings, cut off any excess wood with your pair of scissors until you have six segments, measured and cut to fit every side.
Next, apply hot glue to each side of the coffin cutout, and attach the trimmed popsicle stick segments one at a time to the matching sides. You'll want to hold each segment firmly against the side of the cutout to make sure the glue dries firm and the popsicle stick feels secure. If you notice during these steps that any of the popsicle stick segments don't fit perfectly, trim them, or measure and cut a new one so that they all fit snugly together, creating a coffin base.

Finally, take two small metal hinges and glue them both to the interior of one of the longest sides of the coffin. Next, apply hot glue to the other side of the hinges that are not glued down and attach the second coffin cutout, then allow it to dry. The final result should be a three-dimensional version of the coffin cutout with a functioning door that opens and shuts, and room for storage inside.
How to style your Dollar Tree coffin storage box
Now that you have assembled your DIY storage coffin, it's time to personalize it by adding scary items that are perfect for decorating for Halloween. You can find relevant spooky accessories for low prices on the Dollar Tree website or try adding in some the fan-favorite Amazon Halloween Decor that's been going viral. In the TikTok, the creator opted to add green-tinted string lights and a skeleton hand sticking out of the lid for a glowing, ghoulish effect; however, feel free to take creative liberties and really make this DIY your own.
Budget-friendly options from Dollar Tree's seasonal selection include Halloween Plastic Chain Decorations that could wrap around the coffin to make it look like someone is trapped inside, Seasonal Collection Spider Webs with Plastic Spiders which could paint a creepy crawly scene, or an abundance of Halloween Plastic Bone Decorations that make the singular coffin look like a mass grave. You could even fill the coffin with candy and offer a sweet surprise to house guests or family members to get everyone in the spirit. Whatever style you choose, you can display the final product as a centerpiece on a table or as a spooky accent on shelves or mantles to really set the mood and inspire a healthy dose of seasonal fright.
