Turn Cheap Candy Buckets Into Festive Halloween Decor With This DIY Project

Decorating is one of the most enjoyable parts of the fall. Between the faux spiderwebs and classic pumpkins, you get the opportunity to transform your house into one that looks either haunted or inviting. Whether you prefer to deck out your yard using outdoor Halloween décor ideas or just add a few items to your porch, you probably know just how pricey some of these decorations can be. If you're looking for a cheap but fun way to make your porch more festive for the fall season and Halloween, then a DIY Jack-o'-lantern candy bucket planter tree could be the perfect project for you this season. Best of all, you can customize it to be ideal for your home, regardless of whether you prefer a Halloween or general autumnal look.

For this DIY project, you will need a pot, a metal or wooden pole, a drill, scissors, several Jack-o'-lantern candy buckets, potting mix, and some plants, such as the best fall flowers to plant in pots. A large pot is ideal for balancing the look and preventing instability. If you don't have a pot to repurpose, you can thrift one or buy a new one for about $15 from Walmart. For the planter tree's support, a metal pole or rebar is strong, but wooden plant support stakes should be able to get the job done and cost only a few dollars. Check the height of your candy buckets, usually 8 inches, and the depth of your large pot to make sure your pole is long enough. Pumpkin candy buckets are available at WalmartFarm and Fleet, and other stores for under $2 each.

Building and customizing your Halloween planter tree

Once you have everything, cut off the bucket handles and drill a hole in the center of the bottom of each bucket. The hole must be large enough to slide down your support pole. Add soil to the large pot, burying the bottom of the pole. Next, slide each pumpkin onto the pole, leaning them to alternating sides and resting them on top of one another. Add plants and soil, ensuring the weight distribution keeps the pattern. Then, enjoy the way your cute planter creates a Pinterest-perfect fall porch.

Although 8-inch buckets are the classic candy-collecting size, they may be difficult to find as it gets closer to Halloween. Luckily, you can build a miniature version and potentially spend less on supplies. Just use a few 2.5-inch buckets, like the MCPINKY mini Halloween pumpkin buckets, a medium or small houseplant pot, a short support stake, a bit of potting soil, and succulents or other small plants.

After determining the size, consider style and color. To go all-out for Halloween night, and have pumpkins that cast an eerie light, glow-in-the-dark spray paint is perfect. Cover the Jack-o'-lantern faces using tape before applying white primer, glow-in-the-dark spray paint, and a top coat. Remove the tape once they are completely dry. While bright orange and glow-in-the-dark paint work well for Halloween, there are also ways to make the planter tree more autumnal than eerie. For example, you could turn the planter tree so the Jack-o'-lantern faces aren't visible to guests, and spray paint the buckets white, pale green, or faded orange to soften their look and make décor that works all season long.
