An Adorable DIY Craft Storage Idea That'll Make Use Of An Old Shoe Box
It's amazing how many uses a single shoe box can have aside from just holding shoes. Maybe we have the "right-brain thinkers" to thank for this, because there are so many creative ways to repurpose them. Some people reuse old shoe boxes for DIY kitchen storage, while others turn them into organizers for closet items. While those ideas are certainly useful, content creator @mrsclarehoops shared another clever use — turning a shoebox into an adorable craft storage station. This hack works best with larger, wider shoe boxes that have a detached lid, like the ones that hold bulkier shoes such as chunky heels or boots. The extra space gives you more room to work with and store supplies. And if yours has an attached lid, simply cut it off.
For this DIY craft storage hack, you'll need a shoe box, a box cutter or X-Acto knife, some colorful spray paint, and a hot glue gun, because what DIY doesn't call for one. You can also line the inside with burlap or another soft fabric that can handle stains, or add trendy accent stickers once the paint dries. The options are endless, and once you're done cutting and gluing, you'll probably get a clearer picture of all the ways you can customize it.
Turn that old shoe box of yours into a convenient craft storage station
Start by grabbing one of your larger shoe boxes and cutting an upside-down triangle on the longer side of the box, right in the middle. The tip of your triangle should reach all the way down to the bottom edge. Repeat this step on the opposite side. Then, cut a shallow line across the middle from one triangle tip to the other — just enough to fold the cardboard easily. Keep it folded. To add a bit of reinforcement, cut the lid in half and place one side of the box inside it, trimming as needed so it fits the shape of the side. Do the same for the opposite side. This step is optional since the box can still stand just fine without it.
Now, glue the bottom of the box where the folded sections meet, then secure the side supports. Cut a small section in the middle where the two sides touch to serve as your handle. Use leftover cardboard or pieces from another shoebox to make small dividers for organizing your supplies. Finish by spray painting the box in your preferred color. If you plan to line the inside, spray paint first, then add the fabric and dividers once everything is dry. You can also wrap some washi tape or glue jute rope around the handle to make it sturdier and cuter. And that's it — your DIY craft storage station is complete, and you've managed to declutter your closet in the process.
