Tacky Or Resourceful: The Dollar Tree Toilet Paper Shelf That Requires No Tools

Extra space in the bathroom to store toilet paper rolls always seems to be in short supply. No matter how much cabinet space your bathroom has, there never seems to be enough. You wanna know what else seems to be in short supply? Lots of money to buy more storage shelves for the bathroom and your errant TP rolls. Fortunately, there's a Dollar Tree hack that will cost you just $6 to make, and yet, still gives you plenty of space where you can keep a couple of those extra rolls of TP nearby. In fact, this handy DIY shelf is so compact, it can even be an easy storage solution for a bathroom with limited wall space and make changing the paper less of a chore by hanging it right near the commode.

Some assembly is required for this Dollar Tree TP shelf unit. The DIY starts with two Essentials wire rectangular baskets – these measure almost 7 inches by 9 inches with 4-inch walls — and one 9-inch-by-12-inch Essentials wire storage basket tray. You'll also need to come to the crafting table with a pair of scissors. Be sure to grab a few Command hooks out of the kitchen junk drawer to hang the shelf on the wall while you're at it. Finally, to convert these singular baskets into a shelf unit, you'll need a package of Tool Bench nylon cable ties, which you'll also find at Dollar Tree. You'll keep the setup on the resourceful-instead-of-tacky side if you go with black zip ties to match the black baskets. In other words, avoid the colored zip ties for this DIY project.

MacGyvering a toilet paper shelf from Dollar Tree baskets

For this project, you'll attach the smaller baskets inside the wire tray to create a toilet paper shelf with two baskets. Nestle one of the smaller baskets into the bottom of the wire tray so that it sits on the tray's 2-inch wall. The long side of the basket should fit inside the width of the tray. Once that's done, fasten the back of the small basket to the wire tray with two or three zip ties.

Look closely at the wire tray. You'll find a corner where the bottom of the tray meets with the short wall. Attach the second basket to that first wire with more zip ties. Once secured, trim the tails off of the zip ties. There will be more than enough clearance between the two small baskets to hold the toilet paper if you've done this correctly, and it should be big enough to hold two rolls of TP in each basket.

To hang your toilet paper holder, attach two Command hooks to the bathroom wall. Make a second or third shelf if you need more storage space. For a different style, hook one of Dollar Tree's Garden Collection hanging wire baskets to the bottom of the TP shelf. The hanging basket, similar to TikTok's stylish idea to hide toilet paper and keep it easily accessible, is big enough to store extra rolls of toilet paper or some small packages of tissue paper. If you're storing small items, as well, lining the hanging basket with a cloth or bandana keeps them from falling out.
