The Color Trend An Interior Designer Would Skip In 2026: 'It's Just Really Loud And Dated'

There's no denying that shades of green and yellow have been majorly trending in 2025 — both individually, and as a popular color combination. For example, we've been seeing quite a bit of green and yellow in the kitchen and in the living room. But according to interior design expert and viral TikTok creator Phoenix Grey, it's time to rethink pairing these two hues together as we move into 2026. "I'm against this yellow and green trend, this color combination for me just doesn't do it," he revealed in a recent TikTok video where he shared a few of his favorite and least favorite rising trends. "It always looks like a sports team — no matter if it's saturated or desaturated," he added. "Honestly, it's just really loud and dated." His followers were quick to agree in the comments, with one referring to the color combination as a definite "no-no."

That's not to say you need to avoid green and yellow altogether, though. In fact, separately, these two colors will continue trending in 2026 — but in slightly different ways than we've seen this year. While dark emerald, forest, and olive green tones have dominated 2025, next year's greens will lighter and softer — as seen with Valspar's 2026 Color of the Year, Warm Eucalyptus. As for yellow, this past year has embraced bright, sunny shades, but in 2026, it will be all about natural, earthy tones — think mustard yellow and soft butter yellows, the latter of which is a great color to try in your home for an instant mood boost.

Finding the perfect color pairings for green and yellow

While green and yellow might not be the most visually appealing color combination, you certainly won't have a hard time finding colors that pair beautifully with either of these tones. If you really want to incorporate green into your space, consider pairing it with shades of soft brown and blue with gray undertones — these hues, combined with a warm eucalyptus green, are set to be a popular color palette for 2026. Or, if you're looking for something slightly on the bolder side, consider a green and red color pairing, which is actually a bold and unexpected color combo you'll be seeing in kitchens everywhere in 2026. There are quite a few color palettes to use if you're featuring green in your house, though, so you have plenty of options when it comes to finding the right color combination. Other pairings that work well include green and dusty pink and green and burnt orange.

Alternatively, if you want to find a way to bring yellow into your space, think about pairing it with shades of brown or rich burgundy — especially if you plan to lean more toward the nature-inspired, mustard and butter yellow shades that will continue trending next year. Blue also pairs wonderfully with yellow. Considering that blue-gray is expected to have a major moment next year thanks to its calming effects, a soft blue and yellow color palette could be a perfect choice for a cheerful yet relaxing space.
