The deviled egg platters we know and love today were introduced in the 1930s but really gained popularity somewhere between 1940 and 1970. While the cocktail party generation of the past may not be thriving quite the same way, these plates still pop up from time to time in contemporary collections. You can also spot them in thrift stores. If you have one of these sassy relics and aren't using it, don't despair. There's no reason for this blast from the past to become part of the landfill -– it can be repurposed into adorable flower decor for your garden. All you need is a little creativity and some green PVC pipe.
The key to rejuvenating your old cocktail platter into a backyard accessory is all in the shape of the egg cups. They're almost always circular, and all those scalloped edges perfectly resemble the blooms you love so much. It doesn't take a lot to upcycle thrifted glassware into beautiful, bespoke DIY garden decor when it does half the work for you. Attach a PVC pipe to the back and glue a bowl into the center to serve as the pistil, and voila, the biggest flower on your property once held your favorite snack. No waste, and you've gained some unique and stylish decor.
Make your deviled egg garden platter bloom
To make this project your own, you'll need to pick up a few supplies aside from the obvious deviled egg platter. PVC pipe, like Rebower 14" Plastic Rigid Tubing, makes for a great stem. Outdoor paint, like FolkArt Murano Acrylic Glass Paint, will help you add personality and color as you DIY this garden ornament to enhance your outdoor space. You can also pick up any additional embellishments you'd like to add to your larger-than-life floral creation, including a smaller bowl for the center, ribbon, decals, or rhinestones. With supplies gathered, it's time to transform your egg tray.
Paint the PVC pipe green and attach the plate to it using E6000 or another heavy-duty adhesive. Glue the smaller dish into the center, and then decorate to suit your style. Of all the common thrift store finds you can transform into beautiful garden decor, this is one of the easiest to turn into something new. Paint the trim on the scalloped edges of the platter, or turn each petal into a stained glass masterpiece. Hot glue gemstones or sequins onto the tray so it sparkles when the sun hits it, or wrap the stem in iridescent green ribbon instead of painting it. There's no right or wrong way to customize. Eggs have long been a symbol of renewal, so this glow-up is perfectly befitting a garden in need of some new life, and luckily, you don't have to spend much to accomplish this.
