One Of The Next Rising Stars Of The Design World Comes From Joanna Gaines' Own Family

It's true what they say — the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. And when both of your parents are interior design experts, chances are you might inherit the creative gene as well. This is certainly the case for Ella Gaines — the daughter of "Fixer Upper" stars Chip and Joanna Gaines — who will be making her design debut in the couple's upcoming series "Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House," premiering December 9 on Magnolia Network and HGTV.

In a trailer for "Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House" — which follows the Waco, Texas-based design duo as they renovate their "first out-of-central-Texas project," as noted by Joanna — viewers are treated to a first glimpse at the family's gorgeous mountain house, which will act as their new home away from home in Colorado. They also reveal the exciting news that they've hired someone very special to renovate the cottage that sits adjacent to the main house. "Chip had an idea to let our daughter design the little cottage," Joanna says, to which Ella enthusiastically replies, "I'm accepting the challenge." With her parents' guidance, maybe it will become one of the best home makeovers on "Fixer Upper."

Fans are clearly just as excited, with many taking to social media to share their joy in Ella's involvement in the series. "How much fun to bring your all grown up daughter along. Can't wait!!!" one fan wrote on YouTube. Meanwhile, over on Instagram, one happy fan said, "I can't wait to see what Ella brings," while another noted, "I love that your daughter is getting involved! How cool."

Ella Gaines is destined for design greatness

Although Ella Gaines' involvement in the series is incredibly exciting, it's not a huge surprise to see her stepping confidently into the design world. Before taking on the Colorado mountain cottage, she had already spent time learning the ropes at her parents' company, Magnolia, where she worked as an intern during the summer of 2024. But her mom and dad were aware of her creative potential long before that — when Ella was only 12, Joanna Gaines told People magazine, "Ella is like me. I think she'll follow in my footsteps and have her hand in a lot of things."

And since then, their awe of her has only grown stronger, with Joanna sharing in the Magnolia Journal Winter 2025 issue, "Ella has really come into her own when it comes to developing her own personal style" (via Hello!).

Now, after wrapping up her first on-screen renovation — the latest "Fixer Upper" renovation was completed earlier this year — Ella has gone off to college to tap even further into her creative side at the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York City (the alma mater of design moguls like Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs). And her first assignment was decorating her dorm room exactly to her liking, according to Joanna, who admitted to Today that she had to take a step back and let her daughter bring "her own unique style" to the room. "I let her do the whole thing," she added.
