7 Simple Window Treatment Tips From The Property Brothers

The Property Brothers are known for two things: their endearing brotherly banter, and their practical, no-nonsense approach to home renovations. Drew and Jonathan Scott leverage their respective areas of expertise in real estate and general contracting to help everyday folks optimize the functionality and style of their space while maximizing their home's value. They believe the best way to do this is by keeping it simple, which makes us love them all the more.

The Scott twins offer their advice for just about every house-related topic imaginable — from bathroom design mistakes to avoid to the best ways to boost curb appeal. If you've been struggling with your window treatments around your home, rest assured the Property Brothers can help with that, too. While they maintain that you shouldn't over-complicate window treatments, the brothers shared in a recent Instagram post that they are the secret to setting the tone in your home.

"Although a small detail, window treatments make each room feel lived-in and can bring everything together," the post reads. Here are seven simple window treatment tips from the Property Brothers that will make a big difference in your home:

Add natural light and privacy all at once with accordion blinds

The tug-of-war between a love of natural light and the necessity of privacy can complicate window treatment choices. Thankfully, the Property Brothers have a simple solution that brings the best of both worlds: accordion blinds. Drew and Jonathan Scott love that accordion blinds (also called cellular or honeycomb blinds) offer a similar level of privacy as options like shutters or heavy curtains while also brightening up a room considerably. Not only that, but the blinds' honeycomb-shaped cells also help insulate the space, adding to your home's energy efficiency.

Don't forget about the window frames

If you want to freshen up your windows without changing your curtains, the Property Brothers have trick that transforms them: window frames. An often-overlooked opportunity, you can paint the frames of every window in a room create to cohesion and distinguish it as its own space or change up the window frame on a feature wall to turn the whole thing into a striking focal point. Painting the window frames can also allow you to do away with your old, tired curtains and opt for simple blinds, sheers, or nothing at all.

DIY your curtains

Let the perfect fabric guide your window treatment choice, even if it's not a curtain. In a Youtube video shared by Birchbox Grooming highlighting easy home upgrades, Jonathan Scott said, "I make all my own curtains, you can too. You just have to go and find your pattern and they'll show you at the store how to sew." The good news is you don't even have to own a sewing machine to make your own curtains — just use curtain ring clips to pin up the fabric. The best part? You can save a fortune using curtain alternatives that better suit your style anyway.

Renters: Window treatments are an opportunity to make your space your own

When you rent, it can be a challenge to make your space feel like home. Instead of getting frustrated by what you can't change, Jonathan and Drew Scott encourage renters to focus on customizable details to make their space their own. They say window treatments are one of the best and simplest ways to infuse your own personality into your space thanks to endless color, texture, and pattern options. If you can't install curtain rods, look for peel-and-stick tracks so you can get those window treatments up sans drilling

Transform your space every season with rotating curtains

The Property Brothers told Restonic that changing bedroom curtains with the seasons can encourage healthy sleep habits while also optimizing the functionality of your window treatments. This can be applied to your entire home — heavier drapes can boost insulation while matching the vibe of the colder months, while linens and sheers make the most of summer's light. "The best window treatments are functional and a design feature," Drew Scott said, so lead with functionality when choosing the season's curtains, and embrace different styles to transform your space throughout the year.

Opt for frosted or stained glass for the kitchen window

You may recall the glass block window trend from the '80s that took new home builds by storm. The brothers would never include glass blocks in a kitchen design since there are far better ways to add interest and privacy to a kitchen-sink window while still welcoming plenty of natural light. As Drew Scott told HGTV, "If you want a window with detailing, install one that's frosted or has stained-glass panels." Better yet, opt for glass cling film and choose from tons of design options for a fraction of the cost.

For light control, choose curtains over blinds

If controlling the natural light in your space is a priority, the Property Brothers advise going with fabric window treatments over hard material blinds. On an episode of "Celebrity IOU" featuring actress Rosario Dawson, the brothers replaced stately shutters with fabric curtains in Dawson's childhood friend's home to allow more light in while softening the feel of the room. While wood or vinyl blinds offer plenty of privacy, you can achieve the same effect along with more light variation with fabric window treatments.
